Self-styled conservative bad boy Greg Gutfeld said on Wednesday that when he saw the video of a white cop shooting unarmed black South Carolina man Walter Scott, he "didn't see a black man killed by a white cop."
"Well, I think the 'no justice, no peace' if you follow that, there should be peace, because right now what you're seeing is justice," Gutfeld said on the Fox News show "The Five."
Gutfeld said the "great thing" about the video appearing to show Scott's killing by Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager was that the incident was available for everyone to see. Then, he offered his own interpretation.
"I didn't see a black man killed by a white cop," Gutfeld said. "I saw a man shoot another man in the back." While Gutfeld spoke, the Fox News chyron on the screen read: "Video Shows White Police Officer Shooting Black Man In The Back."

at least the viewers can see the video and some may reach the factual conclusion that a white police officer murdered/executed an unarmed black man by shooting him multiple times in the back.
let's let that sink in. how often is this happening across the country?

(18,482 posts)...you can't:
- always trust the police
- ever let down your guard regarding the government
- believe most of what you see on Fox aside from the clock

(110,159 posts)can really.... never trust a police. cause there are times for us to not trust a police. we just do not know when those times are. hence, we cannot trust the police?

(18,482 posts)Looking backward, you can usually trust the police; looking forward to your very next encounter, IMNSHO you should not simply trust. There are numerous LEOs that deserve none. It's Russian roulette. Try not to ever pull the trigger.

(3,937 posts)Out of the mainstream, just off the radar and not the most-referred to "news" organization in America. As with Beck and Jones, there should be no need to say Fox News celebrities are unhinged extremists.
With Jon Stewart retiring, Fox News may lose a lot of viewers (who watched Fox via TDS) but some on the Left remain obsessed with Fox so who knows.

It's actually a hallmark of white privilege.

(11,101 posts)I believe that is the preferred Fox News response at the very mention of racist intent or white privilege.

(49,038 posts)You can't "see" a person if you don't see all of that person, including the unique set of circumstances that each person's race brings to their identity. To say that a black man murdered by a white cop is just the same as a white man murdered by a white cop is to deny the history that that black man lived, and the racially-dictated differential in power, and the history of lynchings (which is what these shootings are--just a way to keep black people in line) that the black man was aware of, and the awareness of his racially-based danger as he had to decide how to handle the situation. It also ignores the reality of the white cop, of his desire to teach a lesson, of his own biases and hatreds that came to the surface, and of his near-certainty of getting away with it as he drew the gun, took aim, fired coldly, then planted the weapon near the body.
I'm sure the white cop thought of Darren Wilson, George Zimmerman, and Daniel Pantaleo as he pulled the trigger, and I'm sure Walter Scott thought of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and countless other names that my white self is privileged enough to be able to forget as he saw how the situation was going, as he made his decision to try to run away, as the bullets ripped into him.
You may not be completely right, MrScorpio. That Fox host probably was somewhat aware of the racism of his comment. Take it from a white guy--we actually do know when we're being racist, even if we pretend like mad that we don't. Kind of like the guy who gets caught cheating on his wife and says "I don't know how it happened, it just happened." He does know. He just doesn't want to admit he could be that horrible.

(73,631 posts)What I should have said that he's unwilling to realize that he looks like one by saying it.
People like you and I can see that he does, even if he's not willing to admit it himself. We've seen wingers be this obtuse before, they have no idea how they sound to other people.
Thanks for the elaboration, it was perfect.

"I will not defend any of these guys." -- first words out of the mouth of a self-described Liberal Democrat analyst on FOX, asked to comment on a report listing a series of Democratic politicians accused of relatively petty crimes.

There is another thread about Allen West saying/tweeting basically the same thing.
They are using their media to play victim to "the media".

Asked a pundit the other day about Edwin Black and "The War Against the Weak" and he never heard of the guy or IBM, at least going by the lack of response to the question.

(785 posts)I don't think he literally means he didn't see a white cop shooting a black man.
He goes on to condemn the action saying that there's no way anyone could justify the behaviour. He even states how he used to think cameras interfered with police, but has since changed his position and he thinks they need to be on all cops.
Normally I'd be the first slamming these fox guys, but in this particular case, it sounds like he gets it.
