Pope 'rejects' France's gay envoy to Vatican

http://www.thelocal.fr/20150410/pope-rejects-frances-gay-ambassador-to-vatican

Pope Francis’ liberal credentials have taken a blow after the Vatican reportedly refused to accept the nomination of the new French ambassador, a close aide of President François Hollande, because he is gay.

Laurent Stefanini, a senior diplomat and French President François Hollande’s chief of protocol, was nominated in early January but the Vatican has yet to accept his credentials, officials in Paris said.

Normally a new ambassador’s credentials are accepted within a month and a half. The Vatican does not usually explicitly refuse an envoy’s credentials, but a prolonged silence after a nomination is interpreted as a rejection.

The Vatican declined to comment when asked by The Local if Stefanini, who is openly gay, was being rejected and if this was due to his sexuality.

confirmed.

After a year I would withdraw the credentials and cut relations with the Vatican.

He had some liberal-sounding rhetoric.
Just like the disconnect caused when an obscenely wealthy church professes sympathy for the poor, and encourages the poor to have big families, professing that gay marriage is a threat to families, for example, does not give any "liberal creds" whatsoever. Unless it is considered liberal to not throw gay people from towers.

Mainly because of his discussion about income inequality....so LGBT rights took a back seat.

He was almost treated as a god by many here.

Shameful.

Because he was in a civil union with another man. And in 2012, Vatican rejected a heterosexual diplomat from Bulgaria, because this father of several children had written a novel with a homosexual scene in it.

So Vatican is merely following established policy with this latest rejection.

Saw this on the news tonight in France, and wondered if it would be picked up here.

Thanks for posting, Kama.

Several people on DU who claim to be far more progressive than thou suggested the Pope should have some leading role in the Democratic Party. For a while around here, people missed no opportunity to misrepresent his every nasty word and claim he was somehow 'tolerant' of gay people. It was a fabrication, an act of intentional mendacity.

.."homosexual orientation is not sinful, homosexual acts are."

Where does he get this stuff, seriously. It is so stupid he should be embarrassed to say it.
How any educated person gets a pass for this crap and claim to lead a billion people
makes no sense to me.

I'm guessing the Bible. Which Judeo-Christian religions are kind of wed to. Which means they're fucked in many, many different ways when it comes to dealing with issues such as gay rights etc. They need to update and revise the old tome, like the Mormons or the Scientologists regularly do with their stuff.

Do you think he needs to update or just try and explain the basis for his beliefs?

Seems to me there is all kinds of nonsense they abandoned, I mean the bible
is not supportive with regard to civil rights, correct? Yet, this pope supports
that, I would think..or maybe I am giving him too much credit here.

We are talking molecules, this is what a percentage of people are, they're gay,
nothing is wrong with them.

Nothing in his book can counter that, it is 2015..he should be challenged to
answer these beliefs of his...it does not seem he ever has to do that on any
level he can't control.

The Church is full of hypocrites. In reality the Church is somewhat acceptive of gays. Somewhat. Many priests are gay. Everyone knows, and no one gives a @#$%. I guess that's where that "homosexual orientation is not sinful, homosexual acts are" claptrap comes from. As long as they pretend gay priests (and others) are celibate they're A-OKish. But the fucking ones are not A-OK. I blame the book. They're stuck with that load of nonsense. Somewhere in there Gay = Bad!! and I guess they haven't figured a way to finesse that. What they need to do is get together (Vatican 2.0) and rip out whole sections and start anew. Like that'll ever happen. LOL Not in our lifetime. re: The Pope. When the last one (the Hitler Youth guy) was named I groaned audibly and smacked my forehead. The new one not so much. So I guess that's progress. But I wouldn't expect too much from this guy.
