Another is Dr. James Reeb, who was also killed in the early days of the civil rights movement. We're at our best when fighting for social justice. A more recent example is marriage equality, in which we were at the forefront. UU ministers were doing commitment ceremonies long before Massachusetts got the ball rolling. (I say "we" loosely, because, believe it or not, I've been lapsed for a few years! )
edit: I don't think Liuzzo had a doctorate.

from Wayne State University, the college she was attending at the time of her murder. There are a series of events honoring her this weekend. Today would have been her 90th birthday.
