LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts joined Nebraska church leaders on Monday in calling on religious people to "jealously" guard their right to express their beliefs in public.

"We have a great state, we have a great country, but we need to work to keep it," Ricketts said after signing a proclamation declaring Monday as "Nebraska Religious Liberty Day."

The governor, however, said he was not, at this time, contemplating asking the State Legislature to pass a religious freedom law such as those that have caused an uproar in Indiana and Arkansas recently.

"That’s certainly one of the things we’ve got to look at going forward," Ricketts said.
