In a statement to TPM, a spokesperson for the VP said:
The Vice President was saying what the President has said previously - that committed and loving same-sex couples deserve the same rights and protections enjoyed by all Americans, and that we oppose any effort to rollback those rights. Thats why we stopped defending the constitutionality of section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act in legal challenges and support legislation to repeal it. Beyond that, the Vice President was expressing that he too is evolving on the issue, after meeting so many committed couples and families in this country.

I suppose they're trying to hedge for the Independent vote, but I think that's a mistake, and may cost the administration the enthusiastic support of many. It's time to make a statement and then follow through with it. The administration should stop "evolving" and commit.

I would like to see this department deal with issues of LGBT, Women, Minorities, and other areas of oppression. Right now in the USA we have a backlash against women's reproductive rights, the racist murder of Trayvon Martin, and the continued harassment of LGBT folks. I'd like to see this group initiate legislation, file law suits, and prepare an amendment for the constitution that protects folks other than land-owning white males.
Enough is enough.
