My wife's cousin and his partner would like to get married.

They can't, despite being in a committed relationship for over 20 years. They live in Minnesota. Now, they could drive a couple of hours into Iowa and tie the knot, but they will not. They believe that they should be able to marry in the state where they live, work, and vote. I agree with them 100%. Minnesota Republicans have passed a measure that puts an constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage on the ballot in November. In 2010, Republicans gained control of both houses of our state legislature.

Here in Minnesota, and in other states where similar ballot measures are coming up, Democrats need to turn out in numbers never seen before and not only defeat this amendment proposal but to elect a strong Democratic majority that will enact a constitutional amendment guaranteeing same-sex couples the same right heterosexual couples have always enjoyed.

This is one more reason why getting out the Democratic vote in Minnesota and in every state in this country is so crucial. If we fail to do that, we simply fail and may not regain power for a very, very long time.

I'd like to go to their wedding, as soon as possible. Thanks!

...go out to your cousin and his partner. Can you imagine what would happen if Romney wins and gets to appoint the next several Supreme Court Justices? Just another reason for Dems to get out and vote for Obama and their local Dem candidates.

It would be far better if it were national, though. Again, it depends partly on all of us to elect people who will make that happen.

...they still couldn't get married because one of them is a Roman Catholic priest.

I'd like to go to their wedding, as soon as possible.

I hope you can as well.

of same-sex marriages. Their doctrine seems to be aimed at creating as many new Catholics as possible. There's a strange conflict in their doctrine, I think.

Not doing GOTV will do the opposite. Which is better, do you think?

President Obama will sign any marriage equality bill that comes across his desk. He's telegraphed that. Personally, I think he should just declare his support for it, but I think his advisers are telling him not to do that.

GOTV 2012 is the best hope we have. What is your suggestion?

you are right, a more progressive Congress would be great. Obama may sign an equal rights bill, but I'd sure love to see he come out strong and campaign for it and stand on his own supposed convictions.

Campaign people seem to always seek the least controversial path. Personally, I think having Obama declare support for marriage equality and full civil rights equality for LGBT Americans would be of great benefit. I think he's getting different advice than that, though.

I've emailed him, for what good it will do.

In any case, my big push for the 2012 election is GOTV. That will raise all boats, I think. I'm not even concerned about Obama's re-election. I'm thinking about legislative elections on both the state and federal level. That's where change happens.

The effort is bipartisan and, believe it or not, there are Republicans who are against this amendment. Overall Minnesotans United seems to have a pretty smart plan for the campaign against this amendment and part of their plan is not to make it too partisan.

While we do need to elect a DFL majority to the state legislature, I doubt very much that it will pass a Marriage Equality Amendment and, even if it did, I don't have a lot of hope that the citizens of Minnesota would vote for it. What we can hope for is that Gov. Dayton will get the chance to nominate judges to the state Supreme Court who will find the current marriage laws unconstitutional - that's how things got changed in Iowa.
