Stingrays are usually very docile and curious, their usual reaction being to flee any disturbance, but they will sometimes brush their fins past any new object they encounter.

Nevertheless, certain larger species may be more aggressive and should be approached with caution, as the stingray's defensive reflex (use of its poisoned stinger) may result in serious injury or death.

I dove there once back in the day (took a 'resort course' in a hotel pool) during one of my trips for the annual Pirates Week bacchanal.

No one was getting to first base with the things back then.

The only human/stingray contact I witnessed was when people would smear Cheez Whiz on their dive suits or bodies and the stingrays would suck it off with their tiny scary mouths.

This kind of behavior caused the stingrays to act a bit too aggressive IMO and their repeated violations of my personal space was off-putting.

@#$% that. Back to the bar.
