from The Hill:
The former governor (also) said the GOPs 2016 presidential field had not escaped his notice. OMalley said he took issue with Sen. Marco Rubios (R-Fla.) claims that government regulations stifle upward economic mobility.
It is not true that regulation holds poor people down or regulation keeps the middle class from advancing, he said of Rubios remarks. "Thats kind of patently bullshit.
full quote contained in NPR interview:
"Our tax code's been turned into Swiss cheese," O'Malley said when asked about GOP arguments regarding how to fix things like income inequality. "And, certainly, the concentrated wealth and accumulated power and the systematic deregulation of Wall Street has led to this situation where the economy isn't working for us. All of that is true. But it is not true that regulation holds poor people down or regulation keeps middle class from advancing. That's kind of patently bullshit."

...but he wisely included the republican candidate in his criticism; not merely posturing against a member of his own political party, but making certain that republicans aren't content in hiding behind, or advantaging themselves of Hillary's remark by equalizing it with their own anti-regulatory views.

(85,998 posts)Sometimes in campaigns you can drive yourself crazy with the micro-targeting and the pollsters and the tea leaves and the pixie dust trying to twist yourself into triple back-flips to appeal to the three percent that are the undecideds that live in suburbs and have lawns that are less than 20 feet long and all that bullshit. Just tell the base why youre doing what youre doing and why youre better than the other guy.

(2,792 posts)Wish he would announce soon. I appreciate what he and Bernie would be up against (obscene big money), but we need either or both of them to run for us.

full exchange:
We spoke with Marco Rubio on the day that he announced his candidacy, a Republican of Florida. And he said an interesting thing that a number of other Republicans have said. He argues that an active government actually keeps people frozen at their economic status because if you are well off, if you can afford a lawyer, if you can deal with regulations, you can maneuver through government and stay prosperous. And if you are not so well off, it's harder to work the system. Is there some truth to that? You were a big city mayor; you know how government works.
No, I don't think there's any truth to that.
Not any truth to that?
No, I don't think there's any truth to that.
Isn't it true that corporations, large corporations for example, are able to deal with regulations in a way that small businesses might struggle with?
Oh, certainly. I mean, our tax code's been turned into Swiss cheese. And certainly the concentrated wealth and accumulated power and the systematic deregulation of Wall Street has led to this situation where the economy isn't working for most of us. All of that is true. But it is not true that regulation holds poor people down or regulation keeps middle class from advancing. That's kind of patently bullshit.
