White House Considering Proposal to Extend Tax Exempt Status to Atheists

<National Report>A spokesman for President Obama announced today, that the Internal Revenue Service has been asked to study the economic feasibility of giving atheists the same federal tax exempt status as that extended to religious groups, stating that the President feels that exempting religious groups is in violation of the Constitution and an obvious show of favoritism not intended by our Founding Fathers.

He went on to explain that it is only fair, given that religious organizations have enjoyed this privilege for decades, and as a result, many, such as the Catholic church, the Mormons and what are termed ‘Mega Churches’, have accumulated vast fortunes and seen unbridled, exponential growth in America. This same sustained, ‘helping hand’ he added, should be offered to atheists as well, a group of people who are trying, as religion once did, to gain a foothold and larger acceptance in American society, yet remain discriminated against in our tax code.

Officials representing the Mormon church immediately responded by denouncing the study, stating that there is a vast difference between “God’s word’ and the ‘true church’, which was founded upon one man’s hallucinations in upstate New York, U.S.A., in the early 19th century, and the ‘obviously ludicrous’ idea that the ‘immoral disease’ of atheism should somehow be encouraged by the government. “This would be a gross example of big government interference,” he went to say, adding, “What next, tax exemption for gays, women and undocumented workers, all in order to help them promote their lifestyles? That is not what the tax exempt status was established to do. It’s primary reason was for religion, and only religion to promote ‘lifestyle.’ The idea that there is no God is simply abhorrent to most Americans and should, under no circumstances, be supported by the federal government.”

Protestant leaders, in a show of solidarity with both the Catholics and Mormons, stated that Obama was simply going ‘too far’ this time and vowed to fight, “given that there is only so much of the ‘tax exemption pie to go around.’ “We, as the spiritual and moral leaders of America, in challenging economic times like these, especially given the rising federal deficit, believe that this plan is ill conceived, and will surely add to the government’s financial problems.......................................

2. Couple of things:

1) Does that mean groups like the American Humanist Association, American Atheists, The Ethical Culture Society or individuals?

2) As most of these groups are already non-profit, they retain the same strictures with being tax-exempt, that is the group cannot endorse a political candidate although it can comment on public policy without losing its status.

3) It is a violation of the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to make a non-theistic group pay taxes where religious groups don't. I think the categorization is wrong: it shouldn't be called "religion" wherein belief in "God" is the keystone; it should be called "freedom of conscience".

with no satire. I'm sure it will be picked up as real.
Its well written just like one would expect from a 'real' news outlet.

Conservative news sites have pick up their stories as true many times
I find the site amusing because it satire but not like 'the onion.'

neither religious nor atheist
I am the same as that bug that hit our windshield last night on the way home. When I die I die same as everyone else. To each his own but to me knowing this gives me much comfort.
I was raised baptist so I know the teaching of the bible and live my life like I believe the ten commandments as gospel. I think they are a good general set of laws to live ones life with.
