Flood of Mediterranean migrants not likely to slow - Italy overwhelmed

Over the last few days, the Italian coast guard has rescued dozens of boats loaded with a total of over 6,500 people.

A situation that creates tension in the country, even as a new shipwreck occurred during the night from Saturday to Sunday on the route to Lampedusa, (with more than 700 presumed drowned).

In addition, since last fall, the rescue operation in the Italian sea, "Mare Nostrum", has been replaced by the European operation 'Triton'. But unlike "Mare Nostrum", which was aimed primarily at saving lives, "Triton" is primarily a control operation, generally limited to territorial waters. "We can not say that there is a direct link between the rise in the number of victims and the end of "Mare Nostrum", but keep in mind that the Triton mission "is not to save lives; it can not afford to cover a very large area, and thus we must anticipate shipwrecks that often take place on the high sea, "says Jean-François Dubost.

And, the influx of migrants is unlikely to slow, according to Jean-François Dubost, "given the deteriorating situation in Libya and the conflict in Syria that is degrading along with surrounding countries who can not or will not receive more refugees". In addition, the arrival of spring and less rough seas often increases the number of departures, and Italy thus fears the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants in the coming months.

such as, these people are largely intentionally undocumented; they have no passports, so there is no where to send them back to.

So suddenly Italy is required to care and house and feed these many thousands of people, and it's a route into the EU for these people. Not that this is a bad thing, but it's terribly complicated. Most people just want a better life where they're not being murdered and tortured and living in abject poverty. Most people just want to work for a living and build a real, better life for themselves and their families. But who pays the bill to get them started? Italy sure can't afford it, they're broke.

So far, no one has any solutions.... But I think we can safely say this is a 'shit rolls down hill' result of the bush invasion of the middle east. Another one of those 'I told you so's"....
