What the GOP Doesn’t Get About Latino Voters

On Sunday, shortly after Hillary Clinton announced that she was running for president, her would-be Republican rival Jeb Bush tweeted, in Spanish, “Merecemos mejor que Hillary. Si usted quiere detenerla, únase ahora.” Earlier in the afternoon, before Clinton’s announcement, he’d tweeted the English version: “We deserve better than Hillary. If you’re committed to stopping her, add your name now.” Both tweets led to the same “Stop Hillary” sign-up form on the website of Bush’s Right to Rise PAC. Did large numbers of Hillary-hating Spanish speakers desperate to keep Clinton out of the White House flock to the site? I have no idea, though my strong suspicion is that the answer is no.

To understand why Latinos tend to back Democrats over Republicans, keep in mind that the median household income for Latinos in 2013 was $40,963 while the median household income for non-Hispanic whites was $58,270. Many Latinos back the Democratic Party not because they are single-issue immigration voters but rather because they support the party that fights for expanding Medicaid and other means-tested programs that aim to give low-income households an economic boost. Granted, money isn’t everything. The median household income for Asian American households is even higher ($67,065) than that of non-Hispanic whites, and Asian Americans, like Latinos, lean Democratic. Nevertheless, it seems foolish to discount the fact that Democrats appeal to Latinos in large part because they back programs that materially benefit Latinos.

Support for redistribution proved particularly salient in the aftermath of the housing bust, which had a devastating effect on Latino families. Back when Latinos were climbing the property ladder in the mid-2000s, many were receptive to George W. Bush’s calls for an ownership society. This is a big part of why Bush managed to win 44 percent of the Latino vote in 2004. When housing prices plummeted, and when millions of Latinos found themselves out of work and burdened by underwater mortgages, they were more receptive to Democrats calling for debt relief, extended unemployment benefits, and other economic lifelines. Not surprisingly, Latinos voted for Barack Obama in large numbers in 2008 (67 percent) and in 2012 (71 percent). Note that John McCain, who favored Bush-style immigration reform, and Romney, who opposed it, both fared extremely poorly with Latino voters.

have the money to buy lying ads that might persuade Latino voters that they're working in their best interest, and that would bode ill for our country.

Moneyed billionaires did a good job turning the majority of White Christian Southerners against their own and their family's interests. These people are now well-programmed to vote against their own interests due, in large part, to fire & brimstone pastors who are on the radio 24/7 brainwashing the masses, and weak-appearing Democrats who are actually helping the Republican Party remain in the majority in those areas by not fighting back and looking WEAK. If the GOP and their moneyed-masters get wind on how to see Latino-Americans and what they want from government, it would be a bust for the Democratic Party that is constantly outspent - despite the wailing from the (always wrong) Right using Soros as the bogeyman.

I want to either see the GOP and Republican Party change back to the Republican Party of Nixon - or better yet, Theodore Roosevelt - rather than this Jim Crow/Neo-Confederate version infesting the Republican Party of today...OR...see that Party die a silent death. Either way, I hope no Latino-Americans, nor Asian-Americans, nor Black Americans "flock" to the GOP in my lifetime.

and expect them to support you. The Propaganda Monkeys have for several decades, keep telling us that all Hispanics are Right Wing Zealots, yah wrong, yes they are very much Family Orientated, and that is how they as a Society Group have been able to survive and deal with low wages and no health care. And at the same time put up with Propaganda Monkeys pumping out their hate the Hispanic Peoples cause they are taking all your hard earned tax dollars. Hispanics are no different than other Ethnic Groups that came to this Nation just to put food on their tables, and in return ask only a chance to prosper and grow. Working folks tend to care for others will the Monied Class really do not give a rats butt. There for, many of our Western States are going to go bigtime Blue in a few years.. Out reach programs work in Politics, case in point,2014 elections in Nevada,no out reach to the Hispanic Community, and, the end results was,the Dems got our ass handed to us. Now we are seeing the payback by the Tea Billies and their Ilk. Voter I.D. laws,Charter Schools funded with Tax payer monies, increases in fees and taxes that hit the working poor the hardest. But,the Propaganda Monkeys funded by the ALEC and Adelson-Wynn Groups are saying it's them Illegals that are to blame.
