No doubt these kinds of atrocities happen all the time, but this isn't why I come to DU. Lately I'm bombarded with them and to be honest, although they are NEWS, I suffer reading these "news" bits.
Do we really need to give coverage to people who have psychological problems?

It'll get a little strange around here if we're not allowed to post about Republicans.

(27,461 posts)this is a discussion board, what's to discuss about stories like that?

(90,686 posts)Yes, it happens. Yes, something should be done, and I support that something. If it happens in my town, I want to see it in my local paper.
But if I wanted to poison my heart and mind with that stuff on a daily basis, I'd read one of the really trashy tabloids. I don't come to DU for that.

(15,189 posts)I know it happens, but I don't want to see it. They still need to do commercials for them, but they don't need to show so many abused animals. I usually change the channel, so it's all they gained.

(62,444 posts)It's not about the torture of the animals or children, but the righteous joy of fantasizing about retributive torture of the perpetrators.

And also a media that will exploit it in regularly scheduled programming.

(12,388 posts)labelled "children tortured, murdered" or animals "bludgeoned, hung", etc., instead of the continuous group who seem to be fascinated with these horrendous events?
Either solve them or stop getting a pleasure out of reading about them!!!

(12,388 posts)why give publicity and glorification to these monsters? In many cases the thrill of their 15 minutes of fame is enough of a motive.
And really? Because I'm sickened by reading about torture and murder, I should be compared to Barbara Bush?
I wouldn't usually say it, but you asked.
Nobody said you shouldn't be sickened by it but complaining that it gets posted or implying that it belongs in its own forum is inappropriate. If you don't want to read it, "hide thread" is your friend. Your delicate sensibilities are not the arbiter of what is newsworthy or worth discussion.

(765 posts)Barbara Bush saying she doesn't want to hear any negativity and someone saying they don't want to see a steady stream of stories day after day filled with horror and the stuff of nightmares. At some point it becomes gratuitous rubber necking, and perhaps it has reached that level here.
There's nothing particularly "delicate" about someone not wanting to see the details of horrible acts against animals and children. That's just NORMAL. Reading about cats hung and babies raped and beaten every day is what is NOT NORMAL.
Ino
(3,366 posts)but because you are suggesting that we SHOULD NOT read about it, or post about it. What you said sounded exactly like Barbara Bush's "why should we hear about body bags."
We are all sickened by it... despite your denigrating claim that we are "getting a pleasure out of reading about them" or that bringing these things to light are a glorification! I hide many threads about animal/child abuse & rape. Sometimes I just can't take that wounding of my soul. But I would NEVER suggest that the atrocities be hidden away.
"Either solve them or stop getting a pleasure out of reading about them!!!" Well, the coverage is spurring action. Someone started a Facebook page "Justice for Tiger." I've sent letters to the Veterinary Review Board and the District Attorney urging them to revoke her license and prosecute her -- as have many many others. If we can stop just THIS psycho from harming other animals, it will be worth it. Maybe it will lead to a major shunning of other psychos like the one who posed with the giraffe she slaughtered.
Every gang rape I read about, I give a mini-loan to a single/divorced/widowed woman in that country (via kiva.org)... my small way of empowering a woman to be free... to gain respect, confidence and self-sufficiency.
What have YOU done with your suffering other than demand we not subject your beautiful mind to something like that?

After years of hands-on animal rescue, I have seen enough horror in real life.

(55,894 posts)Like police who shoot unarmed black men?
Women who have acid thrown in their face?
Oh, you say, that has other societal issues around it.
Well, so does abuse, rape, torture and murder of children, animals, women, minorities.

But I won't look at it anymore.

(27,137 posts)Too many people ignoring them is why they keep happening again and again. I understand your pain. I feel it too. But I make myself look sometimes. Particularly when they're lying there dead because someone took my tax dollars and made it happen, and the ''elected leaders'' of this country tell us that they're sorry they killed some more children but that they're just protecting me and my way of life. And then they send some more tax money to the family of the dead children as if that makes everything right.
I owe them that much. To look at their bodies one last time, if for no other reason than to acknowledge their life. What little of it they got to have of it.
- I go piddle in my lettuce and herb garden after (can't do much else), and then I try to do something life reaffirming. And when I see my kids and grand-kids, I hug them a little tighter....
