603 KPH!

Japan breaks train speed record with Maglev train
Bullet train tops 603kph, with officials confident new technology is likely to shape a new global generation of trains.
Tarek Bazley

They brought the world the bullet train. Now engineers in Japan have broken the world train speed record for the second time in a week - topping 603kph.

Central Japan Railway has been testing its advanced superconducting Maglev train at Yamanashi west of Tokyo.
After decades of research and development officials are confident their technology will shape a new generation of trains.

"This train is set up the same way we will use it commercially," said Yasukazu Endo from Central Japan Railway.

If we get off the carbon generating duff, maglev trains will have a near-zero environmental footprint compared to jet aircraft.

Which makes the notion of moving faster between city centers seem sensible.

I don't see it in the upper Midwest...there's not nearly the sense of passenger traffic between city centers of say Chicago, Minneapolis and St Louis being an important and expected feature of life.
