Can Hillary Mix the Best of Bill and Barack?

Ron Brownstein: “As president, Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which authorized states to deny recognition to same-sex marriages performed in other states. As a presidential candidate, Hillary Rodham Clinton launched her 2016 campaign on Sunday with a video that featured two gay men excitedly planning their own same-sex wedding.”

“That contrast captures a profound shift since Bill Clinton’s presidency—not only in American social attitudes, but also in the nature of his party’s electoral coalition. If Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic presidential nomination, she will inherit from President Obama a very different coalition than the one that elected her husband. Her great opportunity is to meld the different support that each man mobilized. Her great risk is that she won’t be able to re-create quite as much of either man’s coalition as she needs to win.”

1. In English for real people doesn't that ask "Can Hillary represent the democratic right?"

I mean Obama said he looked like a 1980's republican. And we know what Bill thought of unions.

6. Well, I think we've got to take him at his word and consider what that means...

And I think it means that like 1980's republicans, UNIONS are not worth spending political capital on

Even if you don't accept that, it still places Obama to the right of traditional democrats, who aren't the democratic left, but who are the democratic center.

I know that "center" thing is problematic because it is relative to the viewers persepective, but when people say H> is a centrist they mean on the Liberal vs Conservative axis not the dem left- dem center- dem right axis.

So the question is really about whether or not H> can represent the democratic rightwing. The answer to that is clearly YES!

Upfront, I haven't read the article.

But the immediate thought on reading the title of the OP was: Well doesn't that just put Hillary right where women belong, in the kitchen mixing ingredients for a new batch of cookies!

Sheesh.
