Ignoring the Religious Right talking point about how the biblical definition of marriage has always been the union of one man and one woman, televangelist Pat Robertson said today on The 700 Club that polygamy was okay during the Old Testament period since it helped populate the race and single women who would have otherwise faced poverty. He also cited biological differences between the sexes as a reason for polygamy in the Old Testament: A woman gets pregnant and she has a baby and it occupies her for a whole year, whereas a man can impregnate 20, 30, 50, 100 women and not slow down a bit. Robertson explained that biblical figures who practiced polygamy were not committing adultery, claiming that the practice only became wrong following Jesus teachings in the New Testament. However, Robertson warned that polygamy will soon be legal in the U.S. because there is no way under heaven that it can remain illegal if same-sex marriage is allowed. (In reality, polygamy has not been legalized in any of the states where same-sex marriage is legal). As sure as youre alive, were going to legalize polygamy and some of the women who have multiple wives seem to be pleased with it, he added. If a man in the Old Testament married two or three women, it wasnt adultery because they were all married. And right now in the Muslim world they have four wives, Muslims can have four wives, and if he wants to have sex with a prostitute, he marries her, has sex with her and when they get through he says, I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you, and then the marriage is over, thats the law. You say its not fair but I dont write the book.

(36,434 posts)Just ask Pete McCloskey. He's not a doctor and wasn't the short-arm inspector, but understood it was a simple case of "The Clap"; he could have been misinformed.

(39,215 posts)polygamy ended in the Biblical era? And yes I know about the Mormons. Our branch of Native Americans also practiced it very late in their history. Great Great Great grandfather supposedly had 6 wives. Christian missionaries in Africa broke up polygamous families and caused a lot of trouble for the family members that were kicked out and that was not that long ago.
As to any connection to homosexuality - I don't think there is any.

(39,215 posts)would guess that only a Jewish scholar of religion would be able to answer that for me.
In answer to my own question. By the 2nd and 3rd Century polygamy was against the Roman law. The Christians were having enough trouble with Rome already so they did not argue. Jews were made exceptions. Throughout the following history polygamy in one form or another existed but for the most part was not sanctioned by the church or the state.

(20,190 posts)I have been home sick and was watching another program. It ended and an announcement was made that "the following is a paid program". I thought an infomercial was coming on, but NO, it was the 700 Club. I found that really interesting. Granted, it was a regular non-religious channel, but apparently the only way Pat can get airtime in Houston is to pay for it, just like an infomercial.
