Lincoln firefighters will receive an animal-rights group’s Compassionate Fire Department Award after rescuing a 6-month-old puppy last week from a burning apartment building.

The firefighters will receive a framed certificate, a box of vegan cookies and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet, said PETA, the organization known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Firefighters responded to the downtown apartment-building fire April 13.
