White House admits: we didn't know who drone strike was aiming to kill

The targets of the deadly drone strikes that killed two hostages and two suspected American members of al-Qaida were “al-Qaida compounds” rather than specific terrorist suspects, the White House disclosed on Thursday.

The lack of specificity suggests that despite a much-publicized 2013 policy change by Barack Obama restricting drone killings by, among other things, requiring “near certainty that the terrorist target is present”, the US continues to launch lethal operations without the necessity of knowing who specifically it seeks to kill, a practice that has come to be known as a “signature strike”.

Josh Earnest, the White House spokesman, acknowledged that the January deaths of hostages Warren Weinstein and Giovanni Lo Porto might prompt the tightening of targeting standards ahead of lethal drone and other counter-terrorism strikes. A White House review is under way.

“In the aftermath of a situation like this, it raises legitimate questions about whether additional changes need to be made to these protocols,” Earnest said.

How awful.

Why is it that Rand Paul is the only politician that has a problem with drone war fare? Liberals were in the streets when Bush was going to war. Now there's never a sideways word... Has Obama completely taken the war issue away?

That's what I'd like to know. We're in 5 different wars right now. Who is going to get us out of them?

If it was a drone attack, a helicopter attack, a bombing from a plane, or a missile strike or a commando raid?

If it was the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, CIA or our paid mercenaries?

If it was innocent hostages or an innocent wedding party or an innocent family or just plain innocent suspicious looking folk?

We don't know what we are doing there, we don't know who is on our side or who our enemies are (notice it changes from day to day), we are not helping anyone, and there is no way this is in our national interest. We need to just get the hell out of the Middle East and, as cold as it may sound, let the chips fall where they may.

Can anyone give me one long term victory, one country where the people are better off, one place where the violence is less, one place where the economy is better, one place where the social conditions are better, one place where the people live in less fear because of our involvement? (Saudi Arabia is not an acceptable answer)

Clinton: With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided that they’d they go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator. Now, honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is that people were trying in real time to get to the best information. The IC has a process, I understand, going with the other committees to explain how these talking points came out. But you know, to be clear, it is, from my perspective, less important today looking backwards as to why these militants decided they did it than to find them and bring them to justice, and then maybe we’ll figure out what was going on in the meantime.

Johnson: OK. Thank you, Madame Secretary.
