This comment will get lost - so here it is - my take on the GMO matter

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=6559093

It was a late post in a long OP, but I wanted to share my views, since I am so intimately involved with seed saving and gardening, yet am also a scientist and think a lot about it as I work on my various gardening activities.

Cheers.

I've tried to make the distinction between the common vernacular of "GMO" and "hybridization" but people around here don't seem to want to either read that or even know it! It's always better to simply label someone as "anti-science" when they don't go along with the status quo, or, heaven forbid!, counter the arguments of a scientist commenting way outside of his/her field.

Now then, since you are not only knowledgeable in this field, but even have a PhD in a science, how about writing a letter to Dr. Tyson about how confused he seems to be with regards to why people have problems with GMO foods and the industry that supports it

i am not against ag tech. we need all the help we can get to feed the planet. knee jerk, unthinking debate is worse than no debate at all.

Definitely agree with you.

I hate that I missed you at the Regulator last week. Your book is very inspiring! I would love to hear how your bale gardening goes.

If the manufacturer can't pay for the studies you want, how do you propose to pay for them?

And given the very large volume of genetically manipulated, irradiated or chemically mutated crops that appear every year, how do you plan to not overwhelm public resources to do those studies? There's more work than the FDA, USDA, or every "agriculture" department at public universities could do.

Health would be funded by NIH, agriculture would fund others, NSF still more. Industry-funded studies are not considered reliable, from what I know, but the OP can comment on that more more authoritatively than I.
