If we were to escape from the tyranny of capitalism which puts short term profits above all else, we could devise an economic system that is both beneficial to the citizens and our planet as a whole.

Unfortunately, that is not a priority in either of our political parties. It's my opinion that the death blow to capitalism will be climate change. It is inevitable, and even with massive leaps in technology, we will be hard-pressed to keep up. And that's assuming that we work as an international community to fix it, which is highly unlikely under capitalism.

There's going to be a long period of pain before we can move on.

A few articles on ecosocialism, capitalism, and the environment if you're interested. They're rather long, but well written. ISReview is an excellent source.
