Maybe Obama really thinks the TPP is good for America

I don't like the sound of the TPP, but I'm not frothing at the mouth assuming President Obama hates America or isn't a real Democrat or is the worst president ever. He probably actually feels like it will make things better for the US. I am a product of the formerly industrial Midwest who saw too many jobs go away after NAFTA, so I don't feel comfortable with any thing related to "free trade." But I know he cares about this country and is pushing for what he thinks is best. He wouldn't fight for something he thought would hurt the 99% for the benefit of the 1%. He thinks it will do one thing, and I (and I know a lot of you) think it will do something else. That doesn't mean he's evil and hates America.

I think people are turning this into something personal against him rather than a disagreement over policy.

1. Yes, I think what he meant by taking it personally

was just that - accusation that he did not care about the middle class. That is wrong.

Some people always have to be right, so if they don't agree with you, they think that you are lacking in character and intend malice. You don't merely disagree that the TPP will hurt the US, you must WANT to hurt the US, because the fact that TPP will hurt the USS has become such a strong opinion of theirs that they think it's a fact.

"I think people are turning this into something personal against him rather than a disagreement over policy."

I also think that this has been going on for years here on DU, by the same group that not only have gone after Obama in a very negative way, but also go after the party as a whole, and let's not forget how much they "love" going after Hillary!

And those folks making this personal will fail, miserably.

They have failed up to this point and will continue to fail in the future.

6. You're probably right -- I don't believe he wants to hurt the US at all. But:

1) He seems to listen only to the retread advisers he appointed.

2) At this point in his second term, he's looking towards his "legacy" -- and I have a feeling that he considers this as big a deal (if not bigger) than the ACA. Parents get very protective of their children.

Isn't this starting to sound familiar?

"He's going to take away our guns and turn the US into a Muslim country."

I hope the TPP doesn't pass, but I am curious about why he's such a big fan of it. I hope more details come out. The words "free" and "trade" are scary to me when used together.

10. (President Obama signed a Free Trade Deal

with South Korea in October 2011.

Between 2011 and 2014 the U.S. lost 60,000 jobs to South Korea.

The trade deficit with South Korea has increased 8.7 Billion dollars.)

Source: The Economic Policy Institute.

At the same time he also signed a Free Trade Deal with Colombia.

There are more labor activists killed in Colombia than any other country.

Why should we continue to believe him ???

Sherrod Brown, Alan Grayson, and Bernie Sanders have discussed these trade

deals and the millions of jobs lost because of NAFTA and CAFTA.

P.S. Some sources place the job loss at 75,000.

13. These trade deals have literally destroyed America. In some ways it is personal.

NAFTA, WTO, China trade... these have destroyed lives, broken apart families, left our people injured, scarred and traumatized.

It's more than just a small difference of opinion.
