I am in Las Vegas and there is a feeding frenzy over the upcoming fight. As much as $360,000 for ringside seat. And fights are now back on network TV. As a country we really suck on our priorities. All private tickets supposedly sold out already. And weigh in sold out also.

(21,786 posts)Mayweather/Pacquiao is the biggest fight in years and it's one that pretty much everyone who follows boxing has been wanting to happen. I'm not sure why you think this in particular says anything terrible about the USA's priorities. Professional football is much more popular, it's on network television, and statistically, pro football players have a higher risk of long-term brain damage from football (a pro player is in 16 games a year, more if they play in the post-season, with dozens of plays a game; a professional boxer may have 40 or 50 fights in a career).

(12,693 posts)In football, and about every other sport that can get you killed or injured, the injuries are incidental to the object of the game. But in boxing, the entire goal is to do as much neurological damage to your opponent as possible.
And yes, compared to some other places in the world the US is relatively sane about bloodlust sports.

I don't get it, but I suppose it's progress from a time when the loser actually died.

I wish that I had $360,000. I wouldn't spend it on ringside tickets though. But since income inequality is such a huge problem in this country, I see that as more of a symptom than a cause.

(36,063 posts)No doubt it requires some talent and discipline. But I lost all interest in watching boxing after my arms grew long enough to defend against jabs and a nasty right hook.

The income disparity has just become very real to me

(100,081 posts)It's disgusting how much money is being poured into this fight. It's seriously more overhyped than the Super Bowl is. Even just to watch it on TV it's going to cost $100. Madness.

IMHO, If someone has the spare cash, then they are free to spend it as they wish. I know some people that think I spend too much on my boats, but it's my entertainment.
While I wouldn't spend that much to see any sporting event, I won't judge others who do.
If someone is rich and pays their fair share of taxes, then they should spend the remainder as they see fit.
