The students of Johns Hopkins University have a message for Chick-fil-A: No, thank you.
The universitys Student Government Association approved a resolution this week saying that university officials should pick other non-discriminatory options and rule out any current and future Chick-fil-A development plans if searching for new dining vendors on campus.
In the resolution, which passed 18 to 8, the SGA stated that having a Chick-fil-A location on campus would be a microaggression toward the campus community, including visiting prospective and current students, staff, faculty, and other visitors who are members of the LGBTQ community or are allies.
According to the resolution, the SGAs stance stems from Chick-fil-A President and CEO Dan Cathys decisive statements against the LGBTQ community. Cathy is known for his anti-LGBT sentiments, rooted in his religious beliefs, which were highly publicized beginning in summer 2012, raising controversy and protest around the brand.

(359 posts)Yea for feel good 'activism" !!!
No Chick-fil-A is planed for the school, yet, she feels "banning" some thing that is not going to happen any way is a good thing. I wonder if she thought to take half the time she spent to research, promote and get the "ban" pass, to instead, picket in front of a chick-fil-a store? Perhaps pass out small flyers at the store explaining the stores hateful position on social issues.
Who knows, maybe she could have reach a few people and changed some view points. Of course, then she would miss out on all the attention her feel go ban got her.

(9,462 posts)same. While this may not be a big issue for Johns Hopkins, if it is repeated on even half the campuses in the US it will have a profound effect.

(39,171 posts)bigotry against LGBTQ should be illegal everywhere. I was referring to how microaggression was used in the OP - the notion that a company should be banned because some might be upset at the mere sight of it. Stuff like this trivializes the battle for equal rights.

(9,154 posts)This raises awareness among college students. Next time they're off campus, or maybe even have graduated and are working, when they are looking for a place to eat, they'll remember Chick-fillet and choose the alternative across the street, perhaps El Pollo Loco.

(3,724 posts)microaggression for someone who is not in your dominant demographic. It's kinda like men (or white people) telling women (or POC) what they're allowed to be offended by, but only as defined by you. In fact, it sounds like you don't believe in the concept of microaggression at all. Which isn't surprising, considering that you will never be subject to one.
Kind of arrogant, frankly.
hack89
(39,171 posts)agism, classism, and regionalism never ever influence how people perceive and interact with me? Every white man, regardless of class and power, treats every other white man as an absolute equal with no subtle insults or put downs? Got it.

(359 posts)I find your micro-aggression against micro-aggression to be very upsetting. You should have least put a trigger warning on your post if you are going to question or challenge my beliefs.

You want to do something about the demonizing of gays in this country - put your time and energy into doing what you can to unelect the fuckwit pols who enable and engender it.

Now, let me see. Does banning Chik-Fil-A because of their LGBTQ attitudes devalue the importance of animal cruelty -- or might they somehow reinforce one another -- all against cruelty whenever we find it stand up?

Air chilled with no water added. This is the only chicken we use at home. When eating at restaurants "who knows". But we mention it at every mom & pop place we go.
