“I am shaken to my bones”: Gay NYC real-estate baron apologizes for hosting Ted Cruz event

Both said they were "deeply sorry" for their "inconceivable" ignorance -- but the boycotts have already started
SCOTT ERIC KAUFMAN

Facing a furious backlash from the LGBT community, the two gay New York City real estate developers who own nearly three-quarters of the real estate in Fire Island Pines and LGBT-oriented hotel The OUT NYC issued an apology over the weekend for hosting a fundraiser for arch conservative Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

David Badash at the New Civil Rights Movement reported that Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass are furiously backtracking on their support for the Tea Party favorite and 2016 presidential hopeful, calling the fundraising dinner “a terrible mistake.”

“I am shaken to my bones by the e-mails, texts, postings and phone calls of the past few days,” Reisner said on Facebook Sunday night. “I made a terrible mistake. I was ignorant, naive and much too quick in accepting a request to co-host a dinner with Cruz at my home without taking the time to completely understand all of his positions on gay rights. I’ve spent the past 24 hours reviewing videos of Cruz’ statements on gay marriage and I am shocked and angry,” Reisner continued. “I sincerely apologize for hurting the gay community and so many of our friends, family, allies, customers and employees. I will try my best to make up for my poor judgement. Again, I am deeply sorry.”

Mati Weiderpass echoed his sentiments, writing that “I came to realize that I might have nullified my past efforts and accomplishments in just one week. On the eve of this momentous legal occasion at the Supreme Court, I dedicate myself to work even harder to advance our cause that I share with the LGBT community; our community.”

But those who read these statements were having none of it. Keith Gibbons wrote that it’s “inconceivable that any well-informed, aware adult in this country could not known where Ted Cruz stood issues affecting the LGBT community.”

Israel and the Iran threat. I also read that a third investor with those two is a Republican, not sure if he"s gay or not. The fact is, an unknown quantity of Jewish Democrats will move to the Republican party over Israel.

The Daily Beast did a good article on it.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/04/26/why-are-two-wealthy-gay-men-hosting-a-benefit-for-ted-cruz-israel.html

But that’s not it either. In fact, before the backlash hit, they told The New York Times the real reason for the event:

Mr. Reisner and Kalman Sporn, who advises Mr. Cruz’s Middle East team and served as the moderator for the evening, said the senator told the group that marriage should be left up to the states. The evening focused primarily on foreign policy, including a discussion of gay rights in Israel versus the rest of the Middle East, and opposition to President Obama.

In other words, this was about Israel.

Notice who the moderator was: Ted Cruz’s Jewish/Israel point man, himself a gay Jewish man and longtime Republican consultant.

Nor was this the first time Ian Reisner has hosted a Republican benefit at his home for that reason. Earlier this month, his Central Park South penthouse—where, incidentally, a 23-year-old gay man was found dead of a drug overdose just a few months ago—hosted a fundraiser for Republican Senator Ron Johnson.

Iran and Gays:

“A Gays” like Reisner act as though Republicans just happen to have a blind spot when it comes to gays, but otherwise they’re just fine. They can’t understand why the LGBT Log Cabin Republicans, for example, have such a rough go of it. If only the GOP could get over this particular prejudice, then there’s no reason why gay people shouldn’t support them.

But it’s not one particular prejudice. Right-wing extremists are extremist through and through. It’s a whole package.

And that includes Israel. Hard-right conservatives are hard-right on Israel for the same reasons they’re hard-right on anti-LGBT and anti-choice politics. They’ve got one extreme conservative narrative: It’s us versus them, Americans versus the gays, Freedom Lovers versus Muslims, civilization versus barbarism. Iran, Palestinians, gay people, poor people, “illegal immigrants,” welfare queens, rowdy young black men—these are bad people. These kinds of dogmatic conservative values are clear, unmistakable, unshakeable.

To be sure, not every foreign policy hawk, Republican, or conservative thinks this way. But Ted Cruz is a moralist on Iran the same way he is a moralist on family values.

Money is a great insulator. Some wealthy LGBTers don't care about gay rights, because they don't feel threatened by discrimination on a personal level. Money protects their lives and their relationships.

That said, I don't care who these two host in their home and for what reason. Like it's any of my damn business. Social media are more and more resembling a dim-witted mob that can be summoned up with the thinnest of pretexts as long as it's smothered in a layer of outrage. We now go after people for literally anything at all. Suddenly everyone's business is our business. It's not healthy.

A lot of these activists are unironically sporting their Ready For Hillary bumper stickers. Yeah, because lord knows, no anti-gay business interests ever worked with her on unrelated matters.

So much burning stupid.

that everyday LGBT people go through just isn't part of their lives. If you have 1% money, the laws don't apply to you. They're oblivious to the struggles of others because of this. "Fuck you, I got mine" etc.

Ted Cruz will say any number of hideous things about gay people, but he will never say anything bad about specific gay people with lots of money.

The fact that two extremely wealthy, privileged gay men would do so does not surprise me. They probably didn't know or care what Cruz has to say about gay rights in Texas. Insulated in their fabulously wealthy bubble, what do they care?

We'll see more of this as equal rights progress. Our community will cease to be a community. We will divide along the usual lines. Too bad.

It is talked about here every day but people seem to be missing it here. I can see he wouldn't know where Cruz stands on certain issues if those specific issues aren't why the event was hosted. I would still think prominent people would check into who was being invited into their home. They were probably too excited over hosting their swanky little event. I am not going to question the voracity of their apology. I am willing to believe it without a second guess.

I'll bet there was at least one other gay 1%er who attended this party and doesn't regret it. That person could point out that your headline assumes one set of interests to be the "correct" one for people (in this case, rich gays) to follow. A rich gay Cruz supporter might put the opposite spin on your headline and say that sexual orientation often blinds people.

The fact is that, if you're a greedy gay 1%er who wants to abolish both the estate tax and heteronormative marriage laws, you have no ready home in either the Democratic or Republican Party. The same is true of sincere religious people who are against war and want the hungry to be fed, but who believe that God also wants them to oppose abortion rights. Then there are the Ron Paul libertarians -- abolish the social safety net and stop the imperialistic wars of choice.

I agree completely with your comment, "They were probably too excited over hosting their swanky little event." As gay men, even rich gay men, they probably feel somewhat marginalized, and this was their chance to counter that.
