Law enforcement agencies should take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of their officers, the statement reads.
Was there a specific threat or piece of evidence that triggered the warning? Something to make police actually believe that the notoriously hostile gangs had put aside their differences to unite against a common enemy, Avengers-style? Eh. Captain Eric Kowalczyk, the departments spokesman, told the Baltimore Sun that he couldnt explain how the information was received or why it was deemed credible, or even if it has anything to do with the ongoing protests over the death of Freddie Gray, the Baltimore man who died last week after suffering a broken neck in police custody.
As the Sun notes, this is the third time in five months that police in Baltimore have issued similar warnings. From the Sun:

(94,591 posts)Before protests over Freddie Grays death turned chaotic, an unlikely alliance was born in Baltimore on Saturday: Rivals from the Bloods and the Crips agreed to march side by side against police brutality.
The alleged gang members are pictured on social media crowding together with Nation of Islam activists, who told The Daily Beast they brokered the truce in honor of Gray, who died last week after sustaining spinal injuries while in police custody.
In one photo, a gang activist in a red sweatshirt crouches to fit into a group photo with rivals decked out in blue bandanas.
I can say with honesty those brothers demonstrated they can be united for a common good, said Carlos Muhammad, a minister at Nation of Islams Mosque No. 6. At the rally, they made the call that they must be united on that day. It should be commended.

(154,021 posts)and this is the big question... what to do with this? Especially when the Baltimore Sun reports three other times.
For the moment local media is not touching this either... given I got it because of that reason...

(25,699 posts)And yet there's still that nagging voice in the back of my head saying "well, we've tried everything else..." Our legal system treats cops like saints. Our politicians treat them like gods. if that keeps up, the public is going to treat them like an occupying military.
Yeah, it's fucking horrifying. And I don't want anyone thinking, "Oh, Scootaloo thinks we ought to start killing cops!" - I don't. But that the nagging doubt remains seems testament to the utter failure of our system to reign in these paramilitary gangs - by which i mean the cops - and restore safety to the communities they reign over.

So who knows, maybe there is a grain of truth. Or maybe it's just anarchist types.
