(27,815 posts)I'm in.
There is no way my last choice of the Democratic contenders is worse than the "best" of the Republican contenders,
and anyone who contends there is "no difference" can save their breath. It wasn't true in 2000, and it sure as hell
won't be true next year.

However, I sure as hell hope that candidate is Bernie Sanders.

(9,688 posts)excerpt from Catch 22 - Joseph Heller
"Theyre taking over everything, he declared rebelliously. Well, you fellows can stand around and let them if you want to, but Im not going to. Im going to do something about it. From now on Im going to make every son of a bitch who comes to my intelligence tent sign a loyalty oath. And Im not going to let that bastard Major Major sign one even if he wants to.
Almost overnight the Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade was in full flower, and Captain Black was enraptured to discover himself spearheading it. He had really hit on something. All the enlisted men and officers on combat duty had to sign a loyalty oath to get their map cases from the intelligence tent, a second loyalty oath to receive their flak suits and parachutes from the parachute tent, a third loyalty oath for Lieutenant Balkington, the motor vehicle officer, to be allowed to ride from the squadron to the airfield in one of the trucks. Every time they turned around there was another loyalty oath to be signed. They signed a loyalty oath to get their pay from the finance officer, to obtain their PX supplies, to have their hair cut by the Italian barbers. To Captain Black, every officer who supported his Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade was a competitor, and he planned and plotted twenty-four hours a day to keep one step ahead. He would stand second to none in his devotion to country. When other officers had followed his urging and introduced loyalty oaths of their own, he went them one better by making every son of a bitch who came to his intelligence tent sign two loyalty oaths, then three, then four; then he introduced the pledge of allegiance, and after that The Star-Spangled Banner, one chorus, two choruses, three choruses, four choruses. Each time Captain Black forged ahead of his competitors, he swung upon them scornfully for their failure to follow his example. Each time they followed his example, he retreated with concern and racked his brain for some new stratagem that would enable him to turn upon them scornfully again."

(11,519 posts)An election is the choice of one out of of two or three candidates who will come closest to representing your views. No candidate is going to be perfect, and quite possibly all candidates will have quite a few negatives. However, it should be extremely apparent to everyone one that even an unpopular Democrat is far better than anyone the GOPers will put up. If we want to see another Bush in the White House then we can just claim that we'll never vote for Hillary or whomever and sit out the general election, but that would be a bad mistake.
I'll be donating to Bernie's campaign for the primary, but if Hillary happens to get the nomination I'll be behind her 100% in the general election (unless by some miracle the GOPers put up a candidate who is more liberal than Hillary - of which there is absolutely zero chance).

(7,906 posts)This post is supporting Democrats. You will also see posts supporting Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Martin O'Malley, President Obama, Joe Biden, etc.
Does this bother you somehow?

(9,688 posts)Doesn't bother me a bit.

(7,906 posts)Are you a Democrat? Will you support the Democratic nominee?
You don't have to be a Democrat to post here, but I would hope you at least support the idealism.
And if you're personally not going to vote for the Democratic nominee, well good for you. I believe that the vast majority will however.
But why make such a fuss over it and call it a loyalty oath? Why not just say Yes, I will, or No, I won't, or simply not comment at all?
It's just a post asking a question. You can answer it, or not.

(9,688 posts)"Instead of eat, Corporal Snark gave Major de Coverley a loyalty oath to sign. Major de Coverley swept it away with mighty displeasure the moment he recognized what it was, his good eye flaring up blindingly with fiery disdain and his enormous old corrugated face darkening in mountainous wrath.
Gimme eat, I said, he ordered loudly in harsh tones that rumbled ominously through the silent tent like claps of distant thunder.
Corporal Snark turned pale and began to tremble. He glanced toward Milo pleadingly for guidance. For several terrible seconds there was not a sound. Then Milo nodded.
Give him eat, he said.
Corporal Snark began giving Major de Coverley eat. Major de Coverley turned from the counter with his tray full and came to a stop. His eyes fell on the groups of other officers gazing at him in mute appeal, and, with righteous belligerence, he roared:
Give everybody eat!
Give everybody eat! Milo echoed with joyful relief, and the Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade came to an end."

(17,656 posts)Bernie seems to have won over a lot of supporters at DU.
So, if he loses to Hillary in the primaries, and then chooses to still stay in the race and run as an Independent, I think there will be defections.

(9,688 posts)$2.5Billion will buy a lot of loyalty. A rather shallow kind of loyalty, an obscene kind of loyalty, but loyalty none-the-less (think bought politicians, pundits, websites, forums, media outlets, ...., on and on for total saturation that's never been seen before). It's what Hillary is running on - if I read her DU supporters right. Unlike them, I don't think that playing the same sick Republican $$ game is the only option in politics. I think the Republicans will surely win that kind of "level $$ playing field" battle in a GE, because unlike a totally compromised Dem who plays that game, Republicans can be honest about it (they don't have to pretend "true, the game I play is corruption to the core, but I'll change that when I win!" . In the end, if HRC uses her $Billions of donations from corrupt banks and war profiteers to win both Dem primary and GE, nobody will be able to call it some kind of "hope and change - bait and switch" deal. We all know where that is at. We know that going in. Those who vote for it know exactly what they'll get.
This is still 18 months before the '16 election, it's WAY EARLY.
My guess is that there'll be other contenders on the Dem side.
I doubt if Bernie loses the primary, that he'll run for Pres. as independent. I think he'll throw his support behind a Dem.
