Let's show our support for this NYC cop shot by alleged asshole...

NYC Cop shot

Reuters) - A man wanted for illegal gun possession was charged on Sunday with the attempted murder of a New York City plainclothes police officer who was shot in the head while pursuing the suspect in his unmarked car, authorities said.

Officer Brian Moore, 25, remained in critical but stable condition at Jamaica Hospital, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said.

Police identified the suspect in the shooting in the New York borough of Queens on Saturday as Demetrius Blackwell, 35. He was arrested soon after the shooting and on Sunday he was charged with attempted murder, assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said.

Here's a primer for DU.

A lot of people are one issue posters.
A lot of people will judge the "reasons" why a person posted something, especially if they have sparred with someone over the same issue.
A lot of people read without ever responding or reccing. Your views count all of that.
Give it some time. You got recs and responses. That doesn't happen all the time.

But the focus should be on Officer More, not on how many people end up reccing your post.

Posts on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays get seen a lot less, and thus fewer recs.

I'm sick and tired of police officers being treated as Gods while most people who are shot and killed barely make it in the police press release.

So a cop who's only "guilt" was being on the job doesn't deserve any compassion, because voicing that compassion equates to his "being treated as a god".

I have sympathy for all victims of gun violence I just choose not to give police officers high reverence over every other victim of gun violence. Are we not all created equal?

I've had it up to here with people who believe that police officers are god-like and lives are worth more than the life of an everyday citizen. You will almost never threads dedicated to folks like Francisco Lopez, of Ogden UT who was cowardly gunned down in the streets early Sunday morning.

Why is his life worth less?

We don't know about all of them; not all of them make the news.

In this instance, we DO know about this particular person and what happened to him.

I don't pray. But I see nothing wrong with asking those who do pray to say a prayer for someone who is suffering, and for their families who are dealing with a horrible situation.

If holding a positive thought in your mind for a stranger is too much to ask of you, you can simply not do so. I don't see why you feel a need to disparage those who do.

Part of this thread reminds me of FR during the height of the Iraq war when one would be labeled everything from a terrorist sympathizer to a "freedom hater" for daring to question the war and Dubya. I am just sick of the mindless uniform worship and phony patriotism that certain elements of our society engages in.

I do not think that a police officer getting shot deserves greater "prayers" and "good wishes" than what a average citizen gets, gun violence regardless of occupation is tragic and affects us all whether it be an officer performing his or her duties or a mom or dad driving home after a long day of work.

I just wish that victims of gun violence were treated as equals and got the same attention from law enforcement, media, etc but sadly if you're John Q. Public and you get shot while sitting in your car you're lucky to get a press release written about you. No one outside of your family is going to remember you and no one is going to create posts calling for "support" and "prayers".

Just the way it is.

I bet we could save a huge amount of tax money by de-militarizing the police and stop conducting the "war on drugs". Which was never about controlling illegal drug use. If it had been, some progress would have been made in the last 40+ years.
It was/is about selling equipment to different agencies in the government and as a control mechanism on minorities.

PUBLIC SERVANTS are open to criticism by the public. Public servants can be video taped while in the process of doing public service. Discrepancies in service, morality, and individual treatment should be public knowledge. Those who do these things are acting for the public good.
