With the end of the 40 hour work week and retirement as workers once knew it workers are not there. It does not matter that the economy is improving. But it is not improving for most workers. The new meme is that most workers will work part time even well into their senior years until they can no longer work or are not allowed to.
The new economy is about endless slavery actually. The rights of workers are just about back to 1900 when there were no work laws. If that is not true just look around at the reality of work today. The employer has workers firmly by their private parts now. And it did not have to work that way. Voters over time gave the business community supreme power. As the power of unions erode further and American workers reject unions their fate will be even worse.

(10,602 posts)I worked at DOL for 24 years and was amazed at how the labor market was so radically structurally changed for the very worst. Today work life is a creeping disaster. And job insecurity is the highest it has been since 1900 and may even be worse. The present labor market under Reaganomics offers little future for anyone in the long term or short term.
The most important thing that is different is that there is no continuity of work or continuity of income over a long term. It takes decades to reach a level of economic security. In the past you had stable careers and long term job security. Now that is ALL gone. Income used to grow with experience and age. Now it is a crap shoot with loaded dice where 80% of the work force will NEVER have any income of job security.
Such an environment leads to economic and social chaos that is common in 3rd world and developing nations. Global economics is naturally predatory and exploitive at the lowest common denominator. And our work force is headed toward the lower standards in the third world and NOT up.

(41,140 posts)and loss of human labor filmed during the Depression in the 1930s. His Hitler satire/serious movie is also excellent. Same for 'Limelight' in the late 1940s, with ingénue Claire Bloom, poignant story supposedly semi-autobiographical about Chaplin's life.
The world famous theme song, 'SMILE' of film 'Modern Times' (1936) was composed by Chaplin like many other movie music scores including 'ETERNALLY' for 'Limelight'. Singer Raul Malo does my fav version of 'Eternally'.
English singer and wartime child radio performer Petula Clark and others sang Chaplin's songs including the hit, 'Love, This is my Song', 1967 which is from his late 'Countess from Hong Kong' movie with Rita Hayworth I believe.
"LOVE, THIS IS MY SONG" (C'est ma chanson), 1967, beautiful song sung by lovely, talented Petula Clark.
