Miley Cyrus, Joan Jett Start Charity Aimed At Homeless LGBT Youth

From bringing a homeless teen onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards to slamming the Indiana governor over the state's controversial religious freedom law, Miley Cyrus isn't afraid to tackle pressing social issues head on. With that in mind, the Bangerz singer has established the Happy Hippie Foundation, an organization that aims to bring awareness towards issues affecting homeless youth and other vulnerable populations such as the LGBT youth community.

To help raise funds and awareness for her new foundation, Cyrus has teamed with Facebook for the Backyard Sessions, which will find the singer teaming with another artist for a unique performance filmed in Cyrus' own backyard. Joan Jett, Ariana Grande, Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace and Melanie Safka are among the artists who will collaborate with Cyrus for the sessions. Each video will debut exclusively on Facebook with an option to donate toward the Happy Hippie Foundation.

I think she has a pretty decent voice. And I like that she's experimenting, exploring and discovering herself. It's what a lot of folks her age do. She just happens to be in doing it in the public eye. She's active in charities, so that's cool.

Good on her, I say!!

I adore Taylor Swift, too. The way that she connects with and lifts up her young fans is heartwarming.

nobody's died from it, as far as I know. I had the misfortune of seeing that Kardashian person in a site that popped up - talk about nearly naked exhibitionism that actually DOES harm - presenting an unrealistic image for young girls to try to emulate. At least Miley is real and honest about herself. That actually is pretty incredible when you think about what so many others have put their bodies through to market themselves. I've always thought she was smart, talented and probably a very good person.

I'd be very happy to see her as successful and evidently good hearted as Miley Cyrus.

You are mistaking patriarchal prudishness for common sense. You're older, so you don't seem to get it. Girls and women get to decide for themselves how they express their sexuality now. Slut shaming is not cool.

Saw their first tour at a JAMMED First Avenue here in Mpls back in 1980 or 81. Memory's gettin' a little foggy.

I can answer that. They do it because most of the homeless youth charities out there are run by Christian churches and those particular Christian churches do not allow GLBT youth to get any help unless it is accompanied by reparation therapy and other hideous punishments. I stayed homeless because I got tired of that crap really quick like. As bad as it was to be homeless, it was worse to be tortured and endure the spiritual and mental abuse at the hands of those people.
