The Missouri Senate voted on Monday to override Gov. Jay Nixon's veto of a bill that severely restricts welfare eligibility, potentially cutting benefits to thousands of low-income families.
Nixon, a Democrat, on Thursday vetoed the bill, which calls for reducing the time families may receive aid from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program from five years to three years and nine months. It also would impose strict work requirements.

State Sen. David Sater (R), one of the bill's sponsors, said welfare encourages "a dependency on government."
"I want to stop that," Sater said. "I want to see families on their own -- self-sufficient."

Sater doesn't understand they aren't dependent on gov't, they're dependent on food.

(3,732 posts)If it's a State thing, or worse, a county thing, everyone will just keep trying to undercut each other in a race to the bottom so "all the shiftless beggars" won't be attracted to the "generous handouts". If welfare is always handled as a Federal program, then there is no variation between localities. Moreover, then dickhead politicians won't be able to cut welfare whenever they want to do some personal grandstanding.

You think you can get people self sufficient by making their lives so miserable, because you believe that they are somehow just lazy and need to be forced to "pick themselves up by their bootstraps", if you believe that you have the IQ / reasoning of a caveman!
God I hate that we have so many idiots with so much power in this country!!! And so many people suffering as a reason.
