Aren't a lot of prominent fashion designers gay? Guess that leaves burkas as the only safe fashion option.
Irans annual summertime crackdown on Western-style fashions is already ramping up, and this year authorities have their sights set on what they describe as homosexual, devil worshipping fashion. While the Islamic Republics strict public dress code has in the past disproportionately targeted women, who are required to be covered from head to toe, men in Iran will also have to be careful about what they wear on their heads, as officials get tough on hairstyles they say violate the countrys Islamic regulations.
Haircuts that show symbols or signs of devil worshippers or those adopted by homosexuals are banned, Mostafa Govahi, the head of Irans barbers union, told the semiofficial ISNA news agency, in comments reported by the Guardian on Tuesday. Any shop that cuts hair in the devil worshipping style will be harshly dealt with and their licence revoked. Gohavhi was also quoted as saying that barbers across the country had been given a list of approved hairstyles for men, without providing details about specific styles that would come under the ban.
Spikier hairstyles are popular with some young Iranian males.
This is not the first time that authorities in the country have attempted to impose uniform regulations on male hairstyles in the face of growing, foreign-inspired trends. In 2010, the government banned mullets, ponytails and long hair, along with overly gelled or spiked hairstyles in what the Ministry of Culture described as an effort to free the country of decadent Western cuts. The following year, authorities also instituted a ban on necklaces worn by men as part of its moral security plan.
Iranian authorities have also issued edicts against men wearing necklaces.

(9,154 posts)haircuts of a certain style were mandated, as was uniform dress, and church service attendance as well. Maybe not by the state, but I was unaware of state laws at the time, so simply do not know.
I don't see myself ever desiring to go back to Indiana. My experience there can be summed up in one word: Liars.

(5,325 posts)......."haircuts of a certain style" or "uniform dress" or "church service attendance" were ever "mandated" by any state. I repeat, utter nonsense.

But DU is awash these days in posts about crazy GOP politicians calling for increasingly-crazy religious-based legislation.
I assume that's a problem, or else why would DU spend so much effort talking about it?

Seriously, the day will come when the Iranian people have had it up to the teeth with the mullahs. It's getting closer every day. And then it will suck to be the mullahs. Had it not been for the Dulles Brothers' overthrow of Mossadegh in 1953 Iran would be coming up on 70 years of democracy.

(33,688 posts)In which he makes a compelling and logical argument that the best friends of the US in the Middle East should be Turkey and Iran, the only two Muslim countries with genuine histories of democracy. It is one hell of a primer on the last 100 years of Turkish and Iranian history and general Middle East history vis-a-vis the US. Great read, too, not dry and scholarly, but well documented. The Iranian people always had an affinity for the US until we propped up that goddamn brutal and megalomaniacal Shah. It wouldn't take much to rekindle it if we are honest and above board.
In fact I recommend all of Kinzer's books.
I will.
