Cafferty was especially caustic.
"Obama pandering to LGBT"
REALLY ...harrumph...in 'high dudgeon'.
Chill out Jack.
Obama is speaking his conscience.
Edited to change 'same sex marriage' to 'marriage equality' in subject line.
I now realize that's a more accurate term.

(52,791 posts)Why was Obama so late in coming out in favor of gay marriage? Is this a political move for him and is it a good idea? In the past the belief was while the base would be overjoyed at his publicly coming out for GM it would hurt him badly among Independents, a group without which he cannot win (neither candidate can win without carrying the Ind voters).
Was he forced by Biden's statement of a few days ago?
Many seem to believe his statement has some force of law, which of course it does not. So how and with what groups does this help him in the election?

or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that 'don't ask, don't tell' is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

(3 posts)As we all know, or should know, the blacks and Hispanics are a large part of the Democrat constituency. Both of these groups are very heavily ANTI gay and anti gay marriage. I believe the president may have alienated a whole lot of people in areas where he cannot afford to lose votes.
Keep in mind most of the swing States have already passed laws against gays getting married and the citizens of these States were strongly for these laws despite having gone for Obama last election. Obama does not have the luxury this time of giving up any votes and it seems he has alienated a large part of his followers in order to satisfy what most agree is a very small part of the population. This issue, despite how the Left in generally feel about it is far down on the list of what voters feel is important today and may well be viewed as a deliberate distraction by the president.
Personally I believe his hand was forced by Biden's statement a few days ago and this was something he definitely did not want to deal with now.

(68,918 posts)support marriage equality. This is not alienation and it is also not a pet issue. Sorry. Your thoughts are lost on me. 15 years ago? Maybe. Today? Your assessment of the nation is wholly incorrect.

(11,522 posts)What was said - ".... the blacks and Hispanics are a large part of the Democrat constituency. Both of these groups are very heavily ANTI gay and anti gay marriage....." is correct, and was talked about on MSNBC last night.
What remains to be seen is whether the average black and Hispanic voter will weigh this statement by the President more heavily than the fact that Democrats will stand up for their best interest far better than teapublicans.
Personally, I believe this will largely be forgotten by November. We'll see.
