If Obama loses the election because of marriage equality

If Obama loses the election because of a stance on marriage equality I am fine with that.

I don't think he will lose, and if he does it will be over the economy or some international crisis, not over an opinion.

And I am certainly not fine with losing (!!!)

But hypothetically, if he somehow happened to lose and exit polls happened to say it was entirely due to him stating an opinion on marriage equality I would say, "Well... it was still the right thing to do." And I would never criticize it. The world doesn't always reward virtue but you can't second guess doing the right thing.

All of that said, he is likely to win. And I am excited that he thinks it's a good political move.

Getting the campaign onto social issues instead of the economy is super shrewd. The Republicans don't have the same magic with social issues they used to. They have lost women with their social-shenanigans so far and we want to keep it that way.

weren't going to vote for him anyway. I doubt there are more than a statistically insignificant number of people who have supported him up to now and will change their minds and vote for Romney instead just because of his statement in support of it. People who agree with the Democratic Party's positions on most things and oppose those of the Republican Party will not vote for Romney even if they are personally uncomfortable with same-sex marriage. It is probably not a make-or-break issue for most people who are already leaning Democrat, but it may increase his support for those who have been dissatisfied that he didn't do it sooner. I'm guessing he will pick up more votes than he will lose.

Thre has probably been a lot of study of the attitudes of independents, and this may be a request to be thrown into the briar patch.

Obama painting Romney into a very difficult corner. Romney was not a favorite of the Tea Party but still managed to pull out the nomination.

Obama is going to make a series of moves that will put Romney either deep into the Tea Party corner which will alienate moderate voters or distance Romney from the Tea Party which will alienate Tea Party voters. It's a lose-lose situation for Romney. At best Tea Party represents only 30% of the vote which in heavily republican areas and low voter turn out can benefit the Tea Party with elections. But for a Presidential election, an election that historically always has the greatest number of voters out there, Obama is going to drive a very deep wedge between the Moderates and Tea Party with Romney coming out the loser.

When Obama fought for affordable birth control covered by prescription he showed women voters just how bad it's going to get if Romney elected. When he fought to extend the low interest rates on those Strafford student loans he showed young voters just how bad it's goign to get if Romney elected. And today with his announcement of support for same-sex marriage he just showed the LGBT community how bad it's going to get if Romney gets elected.

I do believe Obama is sincere - he has shown that evolution since he was elected so I knew that this day would someday come.
