And just to make the late George Orwell feel comforted:
Cop watchers armed with smartphones are not only catching police misconduct theyre catching cops lying about the misconduct, officials said Thursday.
More and more cops are giving false statements in official documents or when questioned about their misbehavior, the citys Civilian Complaint Review Board said
.
In one incident, a cop accused of misconduct during a stop-and-frisk claimed he never rifled through a mans pockets, but video surveillance inside the building showed he did.
But even when confronted with the video, the cop denied the allegation.
(The civilian) can say whatever he wants, thats not what happened, the officer said at the time.

(41 posts)I see this being reported more on network TV, cable TV, and other outlets just because they have to compete with alternative media sources (e.g., Youtube). There was a time when the local news was really the only source for this kind of news. Local TV news is basically a public relations arm of local police, so they never cover anything of substance. Sure, if an incident is terribly heinous, then they have no choice but to cover it. Otherwise, these types of mundane stories never hit the airwaves.
Who did you see covering the events in Ferguson? The regular media stayed with police, while alternative news streams got right in the action.
Shows like COPS influenced a generation. These slickly edited and marketed programs had no competition. Police could be shown in their best light. The person caught would be shown in the worst light. The audience cheered.
Now however, there is competition to COPS and similar shows. Telecommunications has made this possible: internet, Youtube, live streams, cell phones, etc. The regular news outlets have no choice but to pick up these once peripheral stories.

You can't really prove that anyone is giving more and more false statements. Perjury and the like is difficult to prove. I think what is happening is that this is getting more publicity through a changed media.

(948 posts)Start afresh with an UNARMED police force.
Put a new law in place- if a person is aquitted of a crime, the arresting officers should serve the sentence the innocent man/woman WOULD have served.
