(51,076 posts)I don't want my local police departments to have as well as the nuts in our society. Sometimes that line between the nuts and the LEO's is a blurred one I might add.

they'll shut up right quick...
Besides, cops are supposed to guard our rights. Like our Right to Public Assembly. Too fucking bad for them if they haven't been doing their jobs correctly and need a federal reprimand.

(854 posts)are now expected to be militaristic. I figure it was Cheney's idea as a step toward a military dictatorship. At least, that is the sort of person I see him being.

(11,843 posts)Get the government to buy new to replace the slightly used given to the LEOs. To the LEOs, the first taste is free, get them addicted to the gear, neighboring police forces that didn't apply, get jealous and have to keep up with the Jones's. Soon they are buying from the dealer, new equipment and expendables and parts and maintenance...
And all the while the MIC is raking in the cash.

(14,576 posts)This is a great policy!
So why is the guy who has been an otherwise pretty good president advocating a lemon like the TPP? When a policy like this could add to his positive legacy, he risks overshadowing this legacy with another one which will be terrible for Americans.

Here's a way to work to begin to change the program:
Template letter to President Obama thanking him and encouraging him to support the bipartisan Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act.
Template letter to your representative (plug in your zip code and the next page will populate with your representative and a template letter)

Is there a police department that asked for grenade launchers?

I definitely see a need in this country for people to be equipped with this vital piece of weaponry
especially law enforcement, since they always show such great wisdom and restraint in performing acts of violence and can definitely be trusted in all circumstances.

(50,557 posts)Just imagine: It's two in the morning, the snow's been falling since yesterday at noon and you have to get to work. You could shovel for six hours, blow snow for two...or whip out your trusty RPO-50 and clear the whole street so quick you could order a Domino's Pizza before you go outside and be done before it arrives.

(36,063 posts)What's more essential is to get the military ATTITUDE out of police departments. Citizens ought not seen as an opposing force.
The exclusion of tracked vehicles for wheeled vehicles seems particularly pointless. The US military has pushed wheeled vehicles over tracked vehicles for decades and from the debate emerged the Stryker, which IIRC is the vehicle we saw deployed in Ferguson MO. What about that vehicle doesn't scream militarization??
