God damn it. There's the Jimmys. They both rock!
But, for the first time in 33 years, I've got nothing on Dave.

(9,148 posts)Nothing replaces the coolest comedian on TV.
Dave Letterman was the best.

(206,016 posts)After Craig Ferguson left, it was months of never knowing who or what was going to be on until his replacement took over. At that point, was there even an audience left? I watched exactly once, early on, when Regis Philbin was host for a couple of days - and his guests were David Letterman and Paul Shaffer, fascinating discussion.
If Stephen Colbert took over now, that would help to fill the void, but instead there was an old episode of The Mentalist, not exactly an appeal to the the same audience, and it looked like it was in the middle of some ongoing storyline.
I missed Dave tonight, too, have spent much of my life being amused by him during the wee hours.

(1,884 posts)Start Colbert now while there is still an audience. I don't remember a hole like this when Johnny Carson left.

(20,630 posts)regarding Dave's departure - I've literally been bummed out all day long.
Went through the end of the Colbert Report last winter, and Craig Ferguson's exit right after that. Now Dave, and in a few more weeks, we'll have to say goodbye to Jon Stewart.

(20,587 posts)he was always there - even if it was reruns. He had the right pace and a shared sense of humor.
The Jimmys are OK but a bit hyper for me.
It's kind of like losing a friend for the lonely hour.

(9,687 posts)He was funny even then. I fantasized being a guest on his show and telling him how I helped him pass Music Theory. I will miss him.

(9,687 posts)Maybe it was just a filler course. He never seemed to have his homework done on Mondays. He sat behind me and sometimes I would help him "catch up." He said some funny things. Didn't impress me as someone who would be huge in comedy years later.

(9,967 posts)C average, I think. IIRC, he even set up a scholarship for "average" students.
So he was funny, but not that funny...
Thanks for the insight. Great to read about him before he made it big.

(9,687 posts)A summer session. I only remembered it because when the instructor was calling out names his name rang a bell because there was another boy named David Letterman in my home town which I thought was a strange coincidence. I never put 2 and 2 together until he started the Late Late show and I went - wow! He was in my theory class. I distinctly remember he had wavy hair, wore glasses, and slumped in his chair. His feet were under my chair.
