ABC News: Romney camp is reaching out to Romney's old HS friends asking them to offer support

ABC News has learned that the Romney camp is reaching out to several of Romney's old HS friends to ask them to offer "supporting remarks"

https://twitter.com/#!/EmilyABC/status/200638263126523905

Here's Jon Bershad's take on this:

What? How is that going to be good at all?

Can you imagine the best case scenario here? Romney’s going to pull out some other classmate, presumably some ultra rich guy, who’s going to suddenly go on TV and talk about how his old chum Mittens was just the best. It’ll look awful.

Unless the Romney campaign knows that this story is going to get worse, I just can’t understand why they’re responding to it at all.

that Mitt has a likability problem. Perhaps his former classmates liked him just as well as his fellow republicans do today. Until he was the nominee, it was hard to find anyone besides immediate family who had anything good to say about the guy.

Mitt has a reputation of being all about Mitt, it will be hard to find support because the people who know him well know there is nothing in it for them.

they participated in the bullying with him. seems like Romney was the leader. they probably felt bad about it unlike Romney.

i might be suspicious of anyone who defends Romney. i would think they were paid to do it. kind of like that Joe Oliver and Zimmerman thing.

Americans, who are tired of being bullied by large corporations, banks, bosses. We're beaten down with unemployment, uncertainty, hits to our FICO scores for god-knows-what, traffic fines being sent in the mail (again, fgkw??), no or subpar health coverage.

Large corporations sitting on HUGE cash reserves and not stimulating the economy like our 30 years of tax giveaways promised they would do via Reagonomics. My feeling is that even most working-class Republicans, who vote against their own economic interests, will vote for a guy they'd like to have a beer with, but not one who is an overall jackass. I think this story has legs.

Romney & Co. are clueless. They have no idea how much worse this will make him look if he digs in and defends himself.

He would be better off apologizing and using the "youthful indiscretion" bullshit excuse. Bush used it for things he did when he was 40.

He can't pull off the 'likeable oaf' shtick Bush managed to attract voters with in 2000, he either tries to dodge the issue and it lingers like a particularly pungent fart or he tries to reinvent himself as the James Stewart of necrophile capitalism.

Whereas Romney's gaffes just make him look more and more out of touch. He comes off as a slick, snake oil salesman — which isn't helped by the fact that he blows in the wind when it comes to the issues and takes whatever stance he thinks will help him win.

I wouldn't be surprised if Romney 'evolves' to endorse civil unions if he starts to sink in the polls. It would be the quickest evolution of all time, maybe he'd portray that as a quality of its own. "I'll be the slickest, quickest President you've ever had!".

Sure Mitt was an anti-gay bully, but he has shown his "support for our nation" (http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=140745) by becoming filthy rich and destroying American jobs. He proved that anyone can overcome being a "loser" (http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002625254).

I think he's gonna have to look hard and dig deep, and the people he finds willing to tout his good qualities may be ... er... less than optimal, themselves!

I'll bet there's MORE. Much more! And there are probably plenty of victims who aren't dead, too!
