CLEVELAND, Ohio The not guilty verdict announced in the case of Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo is a stunning setback for justice, U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge said in a statement Saturday.
"The verdict is another chilling reminder of the broken relationship between the Cleveland Police Department and the community it serves," said Fudge, who represents Ohio's 11th congressional district.
Brelo was one of several Cleveland police officers who fired more than 100 rounds into a car driven by Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams after a high-speed chase that began in Cleveland and ended in East Cleveland.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge John O'Donnell found Brelo not guilty on two counts of manslaughter, ruling that he did not have probable cause to find that Brelo fired the fatal shots.
Fudge called the firing of 137 shots "extreme, excessive and unnecessary."

(22,336 posts)Police officers seldom even get in front of juries in the first place. That doesn't make it ok.

(1,488 posts)What number is too many?
How many rounds per officer or is this limit to be per responding officer?
If one guy fires more and another fires less do you average them?
Who sets that number?
gollygee
(22,336 posts)but it's excessive. Nobody in that car was moving way way before that.

(22,336 posts)"How many guns is too many" and "How many bullets in one cartridge" etc. There is no specific number, but that doesn't mean that 137 isn't ridiculous. If a person has to ground their kid, we know that 6 weeks of having to stay in the same room is excessive even if we don't know whether 20 minutes or an hour or whatever was reasonable in any particular case. There was a similar high-speed chase with someone who was pointing a gun at police officers near me and there were 5 or 6 shots heard. At some point between 5 and 6, and 137, people are just emptying out their guns because it's fun to shoot them.

(22,336 posts)And it makes no more sense. Have you ever thought a police officer might have done the wrong thing?

Feels like he was charged too narrowly ?
From the way this reads, it sounds like the only way he would be guilty would be if they could prove that the bullet(s) that caused death came from his gun. Odds were pretty much on his side.
At the same time, it seems like we have a lot of guys in prison for "accessory to murder" who were outside in the car waiting or walking in a group with the shooter or hanging out in the same bar.
I wonder if there was a better way to charge him that might not have felt as spectacular (i.e. manslaughter) but would have allowed him to be guilty of some kind of felony.
