Russia Plans to Use Prison Labor for 2018 World Cup

Russian authorities want to use prison labor to drive down the costs of holding the 2018 World Cup.

The Russian prison service is backing a bid by Alexander Khinshtein, a lawmaker from the ruling United Russia party, to allow prisoners to be taken from their camps to work at factories, with a focus on driving down the costs of building materials for World Cup projects.

"It'll help in the sense that there will be the opportunity to acquire building materials for a lower price, lower than there is currently on the market," Khinshtein told The Associated Press. "And apart from that it'll make it possible to get prisoners into work, which is very positive."

Russian prison labor schemes have faced allegations that prisoners are routinely underpaid or forced to work long hours. In 2013, the then-imprisoned Pussy Riot band member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova went on hunger strike in protest at working conditions in her prison camp.

Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service has been working with Khinshtein to draw up the proposals, said the lawmaker, adding that they will be submitted to parliament soon.

Many of these big events like the Word Cup and Olympics can only be held in places where the state has such control that the event organizers become gods who can sell and steal at will.

Here is Brazil, will super leftist Dilma Rosueff, and what happened at the cup; Anhueser Busch was able to get Brazil to abandon a tradition of not selling beer at the games; I guess everything changed when the Brazilians bought it. The people in the stands chanted racial slurs at her, so she did not even attend most of the games in her home country. Morale got so bad that many leftists in Brazil cheered when the Brazilian team choked, so much so that there was a serious suspicion that the team threw the game to the Germans as a form of protest.

Now, thanks to the bad blood (and red ink) the Olympics is having a problem on where to put it's winter Olympics in 2022. Oslo withdrew it's bid after protest, leaving Azerbaijan and china. The 2018 ones will be held in South Korea, and the 2014 was of course held in a former beach resort, Sochi. What does it say when the Europeans do not even want the winter Olympics, despite the fact many of the sports there have a European character?
