With a single gunshot, Dr. Tiller joined the seven other people (four other abortion providers, two clinic employees, a clinic escort, and a security guard) who, since 1993, have been murdered for providing safe abortion care. Since 1991, there have been seventeen attempted murders of abortion providers, as well.
For abortion providers in the United States, threats of violence are sadly commonplace.
In their new book Living in the Crosshairs: The Untold Stories of Anti-Abortion Terrorism, David S. Cohen and Krysten Connon take an in-depth look at the harassment and terrorism that abortion providers in the U.S. experience every day. Beginning with Dr. Tillers murder, Cohen and Cannon reveal the frightening level of fear in which so many abortion providers are forced to live, simply for providing safe, legal healthcare. From kidnappings and acid attacks to picketing providers homes and sending anti-abortion propaganda mail directly to providers children, the book lays bare the full spectrum of anti-abortion harassment and violence.

His motto was "trust women" which epitomizes who he was and what he stood for. He was a hero.

(27,985 posts)They are rabidly anti choice and go as far as calling abortion a "holocaust".
Words and attitudes like that fuel the batshit crazies into thinking their violence is justified.
It's awful. And they are accomplishing their goals of making abortion difficult to access, especially for the poor. We need to take back this issue and face it has on. It's important.

(5,829 posts)While some anti-choicers claim their moral opposition isn't based on their religion, most are being disingenuous. But they're also the most reasonable (even if they can't be convinced of a woman's right to choose). Yet they are far too silent on condemning the anti-choice terrorists.
It's the religious fanatics who commit these violent attacks on abortion providers and clinics. And it's usually the same ones who scream about jihadists and how Christians are under attack.
Every religion has its radicals. Self-examination is not something they practice.
And 'defense of another' is a poor excuse for murdering those who only desire to see women are able to control their own healthcare and destinies.

A brave man who died fighting for women.
And a crime against us all.

(31,997 posts)it just still boggles my mind that that bastard just walked into a house of worship and in cold blood killed him and that he still thinks he is right for doing so.
