Jeb Bush says U.S. should embed some troops with Iraqis for training

WASHINGTON | BY STEVE HOLLAND

Republican Jeb Bush, calling President Barack Obama's handling of the Islamic State a failure, said the United States should embed some U.S. troops with Iraqi forces to train them and identify targets.

The expected Republican presidential candidate, in an interview to be aired Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," said he was not calling for U.S. combat forces to be deployed in Iraq, in what would be a return to the war policy run by his brother, former President George W. Bush.

But Jeb Bush said there are steps the United States can take to counter Islamic State's rise in the region. Obama has largely relied on U.S. air strikes to attack Islamic State targets in a policy that has had some successes but has not stopped the militants.

"We need to embed American troops, as we've done successfully in the past, to help train them, to identify targets, to do what we do really well," he said.

He said the United States also should arm the Iraqi Kurds fighting Islamic State militants.

No, you dumbass, we haven't "successfully" done so. We spent billions training Iraqis. In 2004, Condi Rice (falsely) said we had trained 200,000 and they were ready to fight Al-Qaida. But, it seems, the Iraqi army is unwilling to fight. On multiple occasions recently, they have dropped their weapons and run when confronted with ISIS fighters. By the way, asshole, we are already apparently arming and advising Kurdish fighters. Republican best and brightest, this is what you get folks.

I don't think its due to lack of training or money. The goals of the iraq government are different than ours.

14. When have we done this sucessfully in the past?

We've done this in the past and the Iraq army fighting ISIS is the result of all that great training. Clearly training them did not make them want to defend their government any more than training them yet again will do. I believe embed some troops for training is code word for simply giving up on them and fighting the war for them. That IS what we've done in the past in countless places. We all know how successful that plan is.

Forget that other ~10 years of training that produced an army unwilling to defend an artificial state comprised of deadly enemies. This time will be different!
