My best to Caitlyn Jenner in her new life...
Speaking publicly for the first time since completing gender transition, Caitlyn Jenner compares her emotional two-day photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz for the July cover of Vanity Fair to winning the gold medal for the decathlon at the 1976 Olympics. She tells Pulitzer Prizewinning V.F. contributing editor and author of Friday Night Lights Buzz Bissinger, That was a good day, but the last couple of days were better. . . . This shoot was about my life and who I am as a person. Its not about the fanfare, its not about people cheering in the stadium, its not about going down the street and everybody giving you that a boy, Bruce, pat on the back, O.K. This is about your life.
Jenner tells Bissinger about how she suffered a panic attack the day after undergoing 10-hour facial-feminization surgery on March 15a procedure she believed would take 5 hours. (Bissinger reveals that Jenner has not had genital surgery.) She recalls thinking, What did I just do? What did I just do to myself? A counselor from the Los Angeles Gender Center came to the house so Jenner could talk to a professional, and assured her that such reactions were often induced by pain medication, and that second-guessing was human and temporary.

(40,656 posts)and that it would be feminine enough that she would be less attacked then she is going to be. What a beautiful transformation. I think the peace coming from inside helps a lot. What a travail it must be to be in the wrong gender. I don't understand anyone not allowing people to be who they are. Smooth sailing, Miss Caitlyn.

(12,296 posts)Thankfully. I was so afraid she would end up looking that the harpy of an ex-wife, Kris Kardashian.
I couldn't quite place who she looked like. Melissa Gilbert and someone else too - can't quite place it.
She looks pretty incredible any way.

Inner beauty, peace, always reflects on the outside.
So this is who that Jenner baby was really born to be.
The Bruce we know is the lifelong struggle of this lovely woman.

(51,651 posts)She's 65 years old. A woman that age, or any age for that matter, should not have to feel she must look like a 25 year old starlet or supermodel to look like a real woman. Those air - brushed images in magazines and movies are not real.
xmas74
(29,675 posts)But for today let her have a gorgeous picture she'll be able to look back on. Many of us have that beautiful picture, usually when we were younger, that we feel we looked at our most beautiful. For some it's a prom picture, graduation, wedding, etc. For her it's her official coming out picture. Let her have it, just once.
SunSeeker
(51,651 posts)I'm just saying that the glamour shot is not real, it is not what she looks like in real life, any more than the airbrushed models on magazines are real. And yet our society acts like that is the ideal woman and what women should look like. It is no wonder that so many women, not just transgender women, are so unhappy with their bodies.

(51,651 posts)I applaud Caitlyn's courage. I hope she finally learns to love her body and finds the peace she is looking for. That is why I said I hope she realizes she doesn't have to look like a starlet to look like a woman. Trying to live up to that unreal standard has brought a lot of misery to women.

(12,296 posts)1. I'm in my late 40's and I have a lot of wrinkles, blemishes and sun-spots on my bod. Not a trace of any kind of natural sag or splotch on Caitlyn.
2. I have a couple friends who've been through transition and trust me, they looked more like Maura Pffeferman ("Transparent" for the first year or so than they looked like Caitlyn. To set this example as the "standard" really isn't fair to anyone who is already dealing with appearance/ acceptance issues as part of their transition.
Ms. Toad
(34,086 posts)Fox News mis-gendered her repeatedly in it's broadcast about her appearance on Vanity Fair. That should not be happening on DU.
Nye Bevan
(25,406 posts)What I meant was that not every 65 year old man would look that good as a woman after gender reassignment.
I will edit to clarify.

(34,086 posts)Most trans women I am close to would not describe themselves as men the moment before SRS, because it is not their anatomy which defines their gender.
