(8,830 posts)the front gate and saw eight feral kittens; about 8 weeks old. No mom cat in sight. Put out food and they came on the run; they were very, very hungry. Continued to put out food, moving the dishes into our courtyard . . . they followed, still no mum.
Eventually trapped them - sometimes one in a day, sometimes two - and took them for spay/neuter/vaccinate/ear tip. We were told by the vets that they would probably run off and might come back. Yeah. Right.
Seven survived. For about six months they lived in the courtyard - we didn't care, because having a colony in place means the other ferals stay away. Slowly but surely, they have moved in. Only one will let us hold him; only one will have nothing to do with us. The remaining five will allow petting to varying degrees as long as no picking up is involved. Our house cats just give us the look ("really? An entire HERD of them? Find homes for them already!" but tolerate them well.
I really didn't plan on becoming an official cat lady. Really.

(113,582 posts)the one I am feeding is part of the t/n/r program, apparently (the tipped ear, and NO offspring anywhere) she is finally allowing me to pet her, but it is clear that she has suffered abuse--every sound frightens her, and moving my hand sometimes scares her. recovering lost ground from the holiday weekend with all the traffic, and people, and noise.

(3,433 posts)My cat of 15 years is not going to be around much longer. She is still having good days but she has had a lot of medical problems. I think that I will have to put her to rest in a couple of weeks. It could be as soon as tomorrow when she has her next vet appointment. I will give her an extra hug tonight. I rescued her when she was 2 years old. She had been at the SPCA for nearly 4 months I don't think she would have been around much longer. Cybel was with me through a lot of tough times. I shall miss her terribly.

(113,582 posts)even though letting them go when they are suffering is the most loving thing we can do, it is so incredibly hard.
please know that the du family of cat lovers is here for you. give cybel our love, and I will send mine to greet her at the rainbow bridge when the time comes.

(24,146 posts)i took my princess for that final drive to the vet three months ago and i there is still a gaping hole in my heart. she was with me through some of the worst times of my life and, although she made judgey faces at me, she always loved me.
Despite maybe having hyperthyroidism, the vet thinks my Cat is doing okay for her age. Cybs is still kicking

(41,864 posts)The thing is the first year of his life, he spent outside and being as wild as he wanted to be. Its taken him a long time to even allow me to pick him up, without him having a fit. Had I started on day one, things would have been different, but my living circumstances didn't allow me much luxury back then. Hopefully some day he will allow me to hug him, but is already an "old guy" now by cat standards.
