With the arguable exception of the Mercury and Apollo astronauts getting strapped to the nosecones of questionable ballistic missiles to be shot off the skin of the planet, this day witnessed the greatest acts of pure courage the 20th century ever saw.

Stalingrad was indeed amazing. So many deaths.

(2,012 posts)there are no Great Wars or "wars that must be fought". 48 million people died in just one war; many of them were great people who would have made this world a better place if they had lived. After World War I we said "This will be the last one; after World War II we said "never again." What did we learn?
It doesn't take courage to send our children to war; it takes insanity. The greatest acts of pure courage where men win glory are not at Normandy or Iwo Jima or the jungles of Vietnam or the sands of Iraq; real courage is when they say No More War and mean it.
