On this day, they hit the beach...and took it.

With the arguable exception of the Mercury and Apollo astronauts getting strapped to the nosecones of questionable ballistic missiles to be shot off the skin of the planet, this day witnessed the greatest acts of pure courage the 20th century ever saw.

My dad was a WW2 vet, of the 100th Division - wounded in the Vosges mountains in northern France, after shipping into Marseilles and riding the "40 & 8" French boxcars across France.

I don't have "The Longest Day", but if I did, it would be a double feature.

Whether you were military, underground, or simply trying to survive. Too many deaths.

Stalingrad was indeed amazing. So many deaths.

Europeans. Risking your life to defend or liberate your own country takes courage. Doing it for others takes a special kind of courage.

But some wars must be fought. When faced with the forces of tyranny, conquest, and genocide, you fight them...and you win.

there are no Great Wars or "wars that must be fought". 48 million people died in just one war; many of them were great people who would have made this world a better place if they had lived. After World War I we said "This will be the last one; after World War II we said "never again." What did we learn?
It doesn't take courage to send our children to war; it takes insanity. The greatest acts of pure courage where men win glory are not at Normandy or Iwo Jima or the jungles of Vietnam or the sands of Iraq; real courage is when they say No More War and mean it.
