For me, it took my daughter's high school thesis about the horrors or factory farming. After reading her brilliant report my husband and I never ate an animal again.

Themselves somehow, a genetic abnormality is how I've come to find excuses for them...

we learn to respect each other, I doubt very seriously we will learn to respect the horses. Or any animal smaller and weaker than we are, for that matter.

We can fight for the dignity of all creatures at the same time.

I hope there is a special place in Hell for such abusers..

There is a belief amongst some Buddhists that there is a special "hell" where animal abusers go.
They get whipped by horse-headed demons until they understand the pain they themselves inflicted.
Once they repent of their ways, they do have the chance to rejoin reincarnation in a new life.

There is no "permanent" hell in Buddhism, unless the person chooses to stay...
