(14,498 posts)Considering the usual odds facing an underdog, underfunded challenge to what is essentially an incumbent candidacy.
People in '67 thought that McCarthy was *Joe* McCarthy at this point in the campaign. ( Frankly, a lot of the electorate didn't even know who JOE McCarthy was.... but that's another story.)
'Course only 511 out of 1500+ delegates etc took part in the balloting.
Still... it would seem to be shaping up as Sanders v. Clinton contest...... the also-rans having polled so poorly.

(7,908 posts)know who Joe McCarthy was in 1968. (Most of those probly would have supported Tailgunner Joe, is my guess.) That is a sad commentary indeed, is it not?

(36,063 posts)It was Clinton (185), Warren (81), and Biden (18).
Clearly one has to be careful about putting too much meaning such a comparison, but it seems Sanders is doing better in WI than just picking up Warren supporters.

(1,381 posts)had a informal call in poll the other day, and the vast majority of callers favored Bernie.
I think his grass roots support is huge, it is just a matter of "can he win" mentality that needs to be overcome.
Wisconsin loves Bernie!

(33,688 posts)Hell's bells, Bernie was in Minneapolis last Sunday and they initially expected 200 people to show up. Even after moving to a gymnasium at a local Native American center there were 2000 IN the building and another 1500 listening to him outside on a PA system. Nah, nobody wants to hear what the hopeless underdog has to say.

Bernie Sanders will be our next President, I'm convinced of that and it makes me happy to feel that way.
I really wanted to see a woman President in my lifetime but Bernie came along and I really like what he says and what he stands for so I am a 100% Bernie supporter

Right now all of these polls are pretty much meaningless.

I don't see Bernie having that problem.

(33,688 posts)no matter where he is speaking or to whom. He always has been and always will be.
I see a lot of the Wellstone effect with Bernie. People who would never have considered voting for him became strong supporters after hearing him even if they didn't agree with him on every issue. Why? Because he was absolutely honest and people respected that.

(45,274 posts)I'm in a small, purple northern county, and I would put the majority far to the left of Hillary, although some of the "moneyed" Dems are Hillary supporters. The very upper-middle class doctor's wife who ran for Assembly a couple of years ago is organizing Hillary events, for example.
As far as the Bernie situation goes, I suspect that a lot of people are scared Bernie can't win and are in Stockholm Syndrome deriving from their captivity by Corporate America. "I love Bernie, but he can't win. We gotta go with the candidate who can pull in the big bucks."
Well folks, ask Governor Burke how well that works.

(36,063 posts)IMO they likely lead the dem voters in support for Sanders.
This is a good polling result for Sanders but it likely represents more where his education campaign will take him in WI than what the current level of his support among voters is.

(45,274 posts)I can guarantee that anybody who bothers to attend a state convention (particularly in an off-election-year) is going to be knowledgeable and committed in their politics. I went to several in years past, until the then Party Leadership (Wineke in particular) drove me away with their cynical manipulations of the crowd & other unsavory actions. The last election cycle, when they rammed Burke down our throats, only confirmed my dismay.
I trust our new leadership will be a significant improvement, shedding the Tate/Rae Golden Mantle.
My bet is that the Bernie bunch will fire up the liberal activists and pull off some surprises. Face it--Hillary people are essentially for maintaining the status quo, with some added attention to civil & minority rights. That just isn't terribly exciting for a whole lot of people. Bernie, on the other hand, threatens to bring real change across the board. The social issues needn't take a back seat to the economic ones, but they can't be the whole of the platform.

(16,184 posts)...but straw polls over a year out from the convention are one of the most useless metrics in politics.
Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll in 2012. Look how that went.

(45,274 posts)However, if Bernie had come in at 5%, I think there might be a few (hundred) OPs pointing that out.

(45,274 posts)I take this poll for what it is--an early expression of some strength among the party activists. It is not any sort of Primary prediction, but it does indicate that there is a body of people out there who may be willing to work for Bernie. I suspect that the average Bernie supporter is a bit more enthusiastic & willing to work for the Cause than is the average Hillary supporter.
And always remember that the word "Socialism" is not as fearful in WI as it is in most of the rest of the country. Despite our recent electoral embarrassments, this is still a state that was settled by German and Scandinavian socialists, that we had socialist mayors in Milwaukee as late as 1960, and the northern tier of counties (Douglas, Bayfield, Washburn) were heavily settled by Finns who brought a co-op movement with them, and who published a very Red newspaper called Tyomies in Superior. I used to tell people "accurately" that "Tyomies" is Finnish for "Pravda." (Pravda, of course, being the Russian word for "Truth."
