Fighting the Derp
JUNE 8, 2015
............ we live in an age of derp and cheap cynicism. And there are powerful forces behind both tendencies. But those forces can be fought, and the place to start fighting is within yourself.
................
.......derp isnt destiny. But how can you whether youre a pundit, a policy maker, or just a concerned citizen protect yourself against derpitude? The first line of defense, Id argue, is to always be suspicious of people telling you what you want to hear.
Thus, if youre a conservative opposed to a stronger safety net, you should be extra skeptical about claims that health reform is about to crash and burn, especially coming from people who made the same prediction last year and the year before (Obamacare derp runs almost as deep as inflation derp).
But if youre a liberal who believes that we should reduce inequality, you should similarly be cautious about studies purporting to show that inequality is responsible for many of our economic ills, from slow growth to financial instability. Those studies might be correct the fact is that theres less derp on Americas left than there is on the right but you nonetheless need to fight the temptation to let political convenience dictate your beliefs.
Fighting the derp can be hard, not least because it can upset friends who want to be reassured in their beliefs. But you should do it anyway: its your civic duty.

The quintessential example is fear mongering over inflation. ... Inflation derp, in particular, has become more or less a required position among Republicans. ... And that tells you why derp abides: its basically political.
But derp isnt universal. Theres also plenty of genuine, honest analysis out there and you dont have to be a technical expert to tell the difference.
Ive already mentioned one telltale sign of derp: predictions that just keep being repeated no matter how wrong theyve been in the past.

(63,912 posts)that doesn't upset me. I agree with him that derp is more prevalent on the right than on our side but it's good that he reminds us to not be knee jerk. He wants us to apply reason for god's sake! Think of that!
This is another reason I love Dr. K. What a fine gentleman...

(12,151 posts)bias, which I guess is what he's talking about here. Everyone wants their worldview confirmed, and is ready to emphasize that which confirms it and gloss over that which is not. Industries and empires are built on this business of self-delusion.
We all need to think critically. They used to teach it in school here and there, and not just in college either.
