Suicide rate of female military veterans is called 'staggering'

By ALAN ZAREMBO

New government research shows that female military veterans commit suicide at nearly six times the rate of other women, a startling finding that experts say poses disturbing questions about the backgrounds and experiences of women who serve in the armed forces.

Their suicide rate is so high that it approaches that of male veterans, a finding that surprised researchers because men generally are far more likely than women to commit suicide.

"It's staggering," said Dr. Matthew Miller, an epidemiologist and suicide expert at Northeastern University who was not involved in the research. "We have to come to grips with why the rates are so obscenely high."

Though suicide has become a major issue for the military over the last decade, most research by the Pentagon and the Veterans Affairs Department has focused on men, who account for more than 90% of the nation's 22 million former troops. Little has been known about female veteran suicide.

Stress from some that don't "Liken these girls in the service" and most disgusting...being raped (sometimes repeatedly) and scared to say anything to the higher ups ..BECAUSE, most of the time it gets talked away.

It's probably very hard to get problems resolved in your favor once they occur.

The military is a bureaucracy - especially for veterans - things take forever. The VA is a nightmare. In the SSI/SSDI thread I posted, people talked about veterans having to travel hundreds of miles for basic medical care and having disability determined on a "percentage" basis.

Veterans have weapons training and probably have a broader knowledge of ways to take their own life and how to access the tools they need to do it.

Also, as much as men like to harp about biological determinism in order to justify patriarchal privileges, MOST of the psychological differences between man and women are in the "nurture". Isn't Basic Training a "break them and them build them back up" kind of experience? It seems like these women were rebuilt to think like SOLDIERS: hence they should share the suicide rate of SOLDIERS - with an added bonus for any harassment that occurred that exploited their status as female soldiers.
