A grand jury has indicted a former South Carolina police officer in the April shooting of an unarmed black man, the prosecutor announced on Monday.

Former North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager, 33, has been charged with murder in the death of Walter Scott, 50.

"I think the people of the 9th circuit elected me to be accountable to them, and that’s what we intend to do," Charleston County Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said during a news conference following the announcement of the indictment Monday. "They have to know they have someone prosecuting the case who is accountable to them."

"We’re going to patiently wait for the criminal trial in this case,” Chris Stewart, one of the attorneys for the Scott family, said in a brief press conference. “It’s just about keeping the faith. The community has done that. The family has done that, and we’re going to continue to do that until the resolution of the criminal and the civil case."

to obstruct justice. And so should any cop who doesn't report any wrongdoing by another or who participates in a cover-up.

That is a rare happenstance. And for murder. That's even rarer.

See you in court, pal.

As a matter of personal opinion, I may think him guilty of a degree of murder that a jury, or the legal definition of the crime, might not support. So the question of if he can cop a plea or be convicted on a lesser charge is significant.

Still, it is notable that the process got even this far.

he will be convicted in a court of law. You can never assume that a cop brought to trial will actually be convicted of the crime that he/she has been charged with.

Now let a jury decide whether or not he is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. A decision based SOLELY upon the law and evidence presented to them is all we can ask for and is, in fact, all we are asking for!

Hope he is found guilty. Unfortunately the system is gamed towards him being found innocent. DA's need LEO to cooperate with them in order to get convictions and further their careers. Taking down a LEO is not going to make the others want to help them win their cases later on.
