History Made in Mexican Elections: An Independent Likely Wins a Governorship

http://reportingsandiego.com/2015/06/07/history-made-in-mexican-elections-an-independent-wins-a-governorship/

We have unofficial returns and so far it’s been quite calm. We had some arrests in South West States, and early on confusion if elections were to proceed in Tixtla, Guerrero. We also had accusations of vote rigging and vote buying. So far, par for the course.

The President, Enrique Pena Nieto added that this was a success and strengthening of democracy. He also said that there were those who “tried to slow the elections through violence, but a mandate is to reject violence and lack of tolerance.”...

Yet, there are two things that happened in Mexico. The first was that the Partido de la Revolucion Democratica (PRD), lost in Guerrero. This is a left wing party. But on the other extreme, we also had Jaime Rodríguez Calderón “El Bronco” seems to have won in Nuevo Leon.

This is a northern state, and he is an independent candidate, that most of his career was spent with the Partido Revoluciionario Institucional (PRI.) This is the first time in Mexican history that a candidate not associated with any organized party has won.
