Why does an Asst. Fire chief need a GoFundMe page?

In the news today we are told the story about the Asst. Fire chief in Texas who, in responding to a horrific car accident, found that the victims were his wife and 7 year old son. The wife was thrown from the car and the son had to be removed. Fortunately both are alive and doing well. Broken bones and a crushed pelvis.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help with medical expenses. At the time of the police report it had reached to over $50,000. Why??

Amber works full-time as a graphic designer, however the family doesn’t have medical insurance. Family friends set up a GoFundMe account for the family with a goal of raising $50,000 to cover their projected medical costs.

....... just because Texas didn't set up an exchange doesn't mean that Texans can't access ACA coverage. People in states that didn't set up their own exchanges can still get ACA coverage on the federal exahange. You didn't know that?

After reading the page it appears that he must have insurance since it didn't state that there wasn't any. They're looking for money to pay for "excessive" medical bills and help for his wife since she'll be in a wheelchair until she recovers more and they have lots and lots of stairs. This way he can stay home ... or not ... or hire someone.

I'll shut my big mouth so that I won't anger anyone here lol.
